mjazzg Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 I've been enjoying greatly Breuker's contributions to Harry Miller's 'In Conference'. I also enjoy him with Gunter Hampel. Any suggestions for other recordings, leader or sideman?I'm not discounting the importance of his larger ensemble work in the Kollektief and elsewhere but I'm interested in hearing his playing in sparser contexts Quote
David Ayers Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Um...Machine Gun... Actually I have no idea - I was wondering the same thing myself very recently. Quote
Leeway Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 It's been a while since I heard this one, but I recall it being good (Hmmm, I should give it a spin!): Bass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Arranged By – Willem Breuker Double Bass, Arranged By – Arjen Gorter Drums – John Engels Music By – Eric Dolphy Piano, Frank van Bommel Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Alex Coke Trumpet – Eric Vloeimans Quote
Paradiddle Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 This is a Quartet date from the UMS series. While technically a Cuypers date Breuker figures prominently. And how can you resist Han? Leo Cuypers: Piano Willem Breuker: Saxes, Clarinet Arjen Gorter: Bass Han Bennink: Drums Quote
mjazzg Posted July 20, 2014 Author Report Posted July 20, 2014 Just listened to the Cuypers on Spotify. Marvellous, thanks Paradiddle. Breuker playing Dolphy sounds an intriguing prospect too but sadly not on Sp so will need to look elsewherekeep 'em coming folks Quote

Larry Kart Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Gunter Hampel - The 8th of July 1969 (Birth) I reviewed that one for Down Beat way back when. First time I heard Breuker. It's a gem. Jeanne Lee! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Thanks to this thread I have pulled out Leo Cuypers' Heavy Days. Have not listened to it in years. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 My copy of Breuker's "Litany" is on German Wergo..you should be able to find it for a fairly reasonable price if you're patient. The original Dutch Relax pressing is the one that will cost you an arm and perhaps a leg too! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Yeah, Wergo reissued it a couple of years later. Still not "cheap" but findable. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 I guess by reasonable I mean in the $100-200 range! Which to be fair is a reasonable price for this album as it does not show up very often...even if it is a slightly later issue. BTW this thread has reminded me of a whole bunch of Hampel and Breuker LPs I should play again soon! I always loved the Hampel LP on Wergo especially but of course the ESP and Birth albums with Breuker are great too. Quote
