Hardbopjazz Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I really enjoy "The Preacher." This is a great version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reJHEv_F7YQ Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I always found it funny that Ornette and Horace both titled tunes "Peace" and "Lonely Woman." Quote
JSngry Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 "Enchantment"! I have a dream that there's a universe somewhere in which "Total Response" as issued as a 45 with the solos edited out, or severely down. Because I love the groove that's gong on while the singing is happening. Quote
Gheorghe Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 besides the above mentioned tunes, I especially like "No Smokin´" , a tune that I love to play. Also a great tune is "The Outlaw" from the album "Further Explorations". Quote
soulpope Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 "The Natives Are Restless Tonight".....btw great title too.... Quote
Milestones Posted July 11, 2014 Author Report Posted July 11, 2014 I don't think I've ever heard "No Smokin." I've been reading Silver's autobiography. He knew and respected Ornette and enjoyed his work--at least in the live environment. Quote
Larry Kart Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 I don't think I've ever heard "No Smokin." I've been reading Silver's autobiography. He knew and respected Ornette and enjoyed his work--at least in the live environment. "Home Cookin'" is on "The Stylings of Silver." Another fine one from that album is "Metamorphosis." Both have striking "interludes," so to speak. They're sort of Dameron-ish. Quote
Joe Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 (edited) I've always found "Silver's Serenade" to be among Horace's most lovely melodies. Love the complex song-form of "Ecaroh" (the trio version especially). "Pretty Eyes" from CAPE VERDEAN BLUES has a great groove that kind of sneaks up on you. Edited July 11, 2014 by Joe Quote

Milestones Posted July 11, 2014 Author Report Posted July 11, 2014 NIce list, Starthrower. I'm also partial to "The Mama Suite" (all 3 parts) from Silver's last record: Jazz has a Sense of Humor. Quote
BillF Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Favorite Silver compositions: "Ecaroh" "Nica's Dream" "Metamorphosis" Quote
Milestones Posted July 12, 2014 Author Report Posted July 12, 2014 That comment about both Silver and Ornette having tunes named "Peace" and "Lonely Woman" hits home even more with the passing of Charlie Haden. I can almost hear in my mind Charlie playing on the Silver tunes. Not that this meeting ever occurred in reality, but you know that Charlie could have played with anybody. Quote
