David Ayers Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Wasn't sure where to mention this, but just noticed that what looks like the entire ICP box has made an appearance on Spotify. Instant Composers Pool These can all be purchased on iTunes but many will feel Spotters is the way to go.... Quote
David Ayers Posted July 10, 2014 Author Report Posted July 10, 2014 Don't agree. Many people can now hear this music. How many could afford the deluxe box set? Or the original LPs? Like this the music can find it's own way in the world, for decades to come. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Sorry, I was thinking of the originators, not the audience. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Merci. Don't know this music at all though I've read lots about it. I'll experiment with one or two - probably that Monk/Nicholls as I might have something to hang on to. A more manageable way to listen to unfamiliar music than a huge box. Any must listen to records? David Ayers Posted July 10, 2014 Author Report Posted July 10, 2014 The originators have the right idea. They want their work to be heard. They have taken logical steps. The (currently) $1000 box set was aimed at friends, family, and fans. It was a testimonial, not commercial proposition. This is all about the (living) legacy at this stage. What they have done monetises that legacy and makes logical use of the digitising done for the box set. This work can now be heard throughout the world as it never could before. Maybe no-one will care but that's another story. Why didn't they just put it on iTunes to get the revenue? Some labels have archived only on iTunes, often at premium prices. My friend's company as done this - I'll have to ask how well it works for them. The company I refer to was and is very ethical in its practice towards artists. Would the ICP archive have done better only on iTunes? It is their decision of course, but at premium price for generally 40-minute albums, I am guessing most 'fans' will stick to their blogspot FLACs. My guess is that ICP are thinking about their legacy and status more close to home and have grasped that streaming is a way to generate interest. iTunes is cheaper - I think - than the box-set but I wonder how many interested people will lay down the $500 or so that it would cost to but all this stuff on iTunes. So I vote for their decision. Merci. Don't know this music at all though I've read lots about it. I'll experiment with one or two - probably that Monk/Nicholls as I might have something to hang on to. A more manageable way to listen to unfamiliar music than a huge box. Any must listen to records? Can't help you on which ones to listen to! The LPs are all so rare and the box set so costly that hardly any-one knows! I found this stuff only yesterday and I am going to pick my way through on Spotters. Quote
David Ayers Posted July 10, 2014 Author Report Posted July 10, 2014 Oh and it turns out that 8 of the 50 are still available on CD - just not on amazon... http://www.subdist.com/cart/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_66 Quote
David Ayers Posted July 10, 2014 Author Report Posted July 10, 2014 Here is the full list of titles, up to the 50th and last, on the ICP website: http://www.icporchestra.com/discography.htm Quote
sidewinder Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I will certainly check this out. Don't have any of their albums but did catch a performance years ago on one of their North American tours and found it intriguing. I remember they did quite a few of the Herbie Nichols numbers. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks for the alert David and also for the reasoned response to Mr Nessa's post.I'm certainly going to be digging into this music - music I only knew by reputation and 'scarcity value'. I'd never have bought the box not only because of the price but because of the poor production values that a number of purchasers commented on.Good to see some CDs are still about. If I like what I hear I may well purchase.Really looking forward to diving into the Pool (sorry...). Still kicking myself for missing the Vortex residency. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) The individual ICP CD's I've heard and own (~5 or 6) are nortoriously inconsistent. Most or even all that I have are live and they don't include the older ones that I've long been interested in hearing (especially the Nichols and Monk recordings) That being said on every CD there are 2 or 3 or even 4 tracks/tunes/improvisations that come very close to capturing the live in person/sound/feel of this incredible band. I also did not buy the box since I heard many of the earlier recordings that I would love to own were needle drops and/or lacked the kind of sound/production values that I personally find very important for this sort of music. I love to hear these musicians close to the way they sound from 10, 15 or even 30 feet away. Waiting on the next US/NYC appearance as even without the great Misha, last time they still were as exciting and propulsive large ensemble as exists in this world. clifford_thornton Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 Yeah I wasn't too excited on the transfers and was happy to sell this thing. Did I sell it to someone on the board? Maybe. I have most of the LPs (not the flexi singles, sadly) and a smattering of the CDs, and realized that was all I needed. With a few exceptions they are all musically inconsistent and that may be their consistency. What might've been better: well-curated boxed sets sampling parts of the ICP arc. Quote

Excellent analysis, Clifford I read a while back (I think about when Jubilee Varia was released (on hatology))that Misha was the one selecting the tracks/etc. from multiple concert recordings. My experience with the shows I've seen - not that many, I think 4 concerts over the years - that a complete concert would be perfect for the full ICP. Thankfully if one searches enough there are recordings of many of the ICP musicians on other labels to hear them to strong effect. Edited July 10, 2014 by Steve Reynolds Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 They're terrific live; I've seen them at least 5 times since 1994...I agree the recent CDs fail to capture the magic. Quote
