A Lark Ascending Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 (edited) A few of you might be interested in this, especially if you enjoyed last year's 'Impressed' compilation: Details: http://www.bgo-records.com/detailsBGO2.asp...alogNo=BGOCD615 Due any day. First time out for 30 years they say! There's also a great live set from the mid-60s: It sounds like a fifth disc from the Miles Blackhawk set! Wonderful! Man with the Golden Arm Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 Saw this brief a couple of weeks ago and very much looking forward to this thanks to some of your hipping eons ago! BGO will deliver to the states for about US $30. OUCH! Come on Dusty! Quote
David Williams Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Thanks for drawing attention to this Bev. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted February 16, 2004 Author Report Posted February 16, 2004 You're welcome, David. There's also a second volume of 'Impressed' due on April 1st (hopefully not an April Fool ruse!). Rumour has it that other discs from the era will follow. I'm hoping for some of the Michael Garricks. Daniel A Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I heard the 'Shades of Blue' album for the first time just a few weeks ago. As I enjoyed it very much, I appreciate the heads-up! Except from a few obvious exceptions, I'm not very acquainted with British jazz, but I immediatly thought of the similarities with some of the Swedish jazz of that time when I heard 'Shades of Blue'. The "Scandinavian" sound in jazz, attributed to some ECM:ish albums of the 70s and onwards, perhaps originates from a style which had more in common with British jazz than anything else. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Not to tallk to myself here but this just landed and I have got to tell you that it must be up there with that feeling when Rooster Ties cracked open "Conflict". I've only gone through this once and most all is new to me save for the couple tracks that were on the Giles Peterson. Worthy of every Dusty Groove-ism you could throw at it! It's that good!!! Michael Garrick (disc 2) !!! Now I know what Bev's been talking about. More than 'Impressed' here. CD Universe is offering this for $20 and change and then I believe it will be released come May as two single discs for regular prices. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 27, 2004 Author Report Posted March 27, 2004 (edited) An excellent release. This is music I've never heard before - apart from the track Dusk Fire on the Impressed compilation (and the live versions on the 'Live in London (Not!)" disc. I came to jazz in the 70s and started to imbibe the Brit stuff from there. This is Brit-Jazz Prehistory to me. The first album seems to me to be pretty standard UK musicians trying to absorb American methods. But the 'Dusk Fire' disc really takes flight. I'm struck by Rendell's sound - in places I can hear where Art Themen was coming from. I look forward to the next instalments! And pray that the Garrick solo discs follow. What I've heard on Impressed and on the radio from Garrick's solo stuff has been very 'impressive'. Volume II of Impressed due out next week! Edited March 27, 2004 by Bev Stapleton Quote
Gary Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 (edited) Ive been really enjoying Shades of Blue/ Dusk Fire all this week.
