I went to the final concert of the season put on by South Florida Jazz last night, a terrific show put on by the Christian McBride trio. We got a sneak peak of next year's schedule and I wanted to share the news:

December 13 - A Sublime Saxophone Summit

Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath joined by Javon Jackson. No mention of rhythm section but there is no way I am going to miss a chance to see Heath and Golson, especially at this late date - Benny is 85 now and Heath will turn 88 a few weeks before the show.

Here's hoping Bright Moments, MartyJazz and a few others will be able and willing to attend. The concerts are at Nova Southeastern. I'll post when tickets go on sale - it ought to be a sell out, I would think.

Dan,

When I lived in South Florida (1982 - 2005) I think we probably went to many of the same places and met some of the same people....Blue Note Records where I met Bob Weinstock and some of the musicians he was recording at the time like Jesse Jones, Melton Mustafa and Turk Mauro, the Friends of Jazz amazing concert series at Young Circle, Penguins (Eddie Higgins, Flip Philips), the home of Eddie Higgins and Merdith D'Ambrosio, etc. Anyways your post reminded me of a concert at a small college there (can't think of the name) where they had one concert with Benny Golson, Jon Faddis, Clark Terry, Billy Taylor....I believe Mark Whitfield was on guitar. They were all approachable and it was fun to talk briefly to all of them. Anyway it's good to hear the Florida jazz organizations are still active and supporting the music.

Yeah Ted we may have even browsed the stacks at Blue Note Records together after I arrived here in 1997. I had the pleasure of interviewing both Bob Weinstock (never transcribed because of the difficulty deciphering his dentistry-impaired speech afterwards) and Eddie Higgins (published in two parts in Cadence) as well as seeing Eddie perform several times. The jazz societies really took a beating after 2006-7, I think because government grants died out, but thankfully South Florida Jazz is still around, and there's a great new performance venue in Delray Beach called the Arts Garage that continues to book excellent jazz and blues acts.

That's very cool news. The schedule is pretty impressive so far:

Larry Coryell September 19 & 20; Cyrus Chestnut September 27

Fred Hirsch October 17; Jason Marsalis October 30; Lew Tabackin November 1

Don Friedman January 2; Freddie Cole January 8 & 9; Houston Person January 10

The one show I am committed to is the Person appearance but I am giving serious thought to Tabackin and if we hadn't seen Chestnut recently we'd be all over that one too.

Up one last time ... me and Bright Moments are meeting up before the concert. Anyone else in south Florida score tickets? Please PM if you want to say hello before the show.

Wow what an unbelievable show, and a nice treat to meet Evan and his lovely wife.

Everybody played great but it was amazing watching Jimmy Heath. Not only did he sound as good as ever but he was a total trip, having a blast and movin and groovin' to the music-making going on. He was like the great grandfather at his great granddaughter's wedding, just having a ball.
