Larry Kart
Another yard sale find. This one I remember from 1959. A bit on the laid-back side but some nice work by all hands -- Bags, Art Farmer, Benny Golson (in vigorous form, with that rather eely harmonic thing he had going in '59 or so) , Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay. Golson charts. Less focus sound-wise on bass and drums than I would like, but it is Kay on drums -- also a somewhat odd remark from Bags about Chambers in the liner notes: "I had some questions about his musical background, but playing with him, I realize he's improved immensely after being with Miles." BTW, the liner notes as a whole (Nat Hentoff working hard and in gear) are full of interesting remarks by Bags.
paul secor
Have a copy and haven't listened in years. Time to take it off the shelf. Thanks for the reminder.
jazzbo
also a somewhat odd remark from Bags about Chambers in the liner notes: "I had some questions about his musical background, but playing with him, I realize he's improved immensely after being with Miles." I don't get it either. Before working with Miles PC worked with many decent jazz musicians (Quinchette, J.J., Kai Winding, Wallington, Bennie Green et al). He had had good training and gained musical knowledge and technique. He had an early interest in Ellington and bebop and mainstream jazz of the forites and fifties. Just don't see what musical background questions he was wondering about unless he just didn't know much about his work pre-Miles. Is it possible Bags was saying that his classical training may have been questionable to him as a jazz bassist/? mjzee
I remember this date from the "All Star Bags" two-fer on Blue Note, where I first heard "Hank Mobley and the All Stars".
Peter Friedman
"Bag's Opus" has long been a session I dug a lot. This thread gives me a good reason to pull the CD off the shelf and listen to it again.

paul secor
Listened last night. Thanks again for bringing this record up, Larry. As you wrote, Benny Golson is in very fine form, as is Milt Jackson. And I was happy that Connie Kay's drums were played down.

etherbored
oddly, that's a date i've never warmed to for whatever reason. something seems off about it to my ears. that having been said, though, i'm obviously going to the wrong yard sales... Larry Kart
Listened last night. Thanks again for bringing this record up, Larry. As you wrote, Benny Golson is in very fine form, as is Milt Jackson. And I was happy that Connie Kay's drums were played down. Thinking of JL Hoots' mention above of "The Philadelphians" (an album I've always loved) I wonder what "Bag's Opus" would have been like with Philly Joe on drums. Or Blakey. ArtSalt
It's the last cut on the album that is the strongest IMCO, it all just comes together perfectly: Whisper Not.
