paul secor Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 I hope this isn't true, but his passing seems to have been documented: http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/jimmy-scott-hard-luck-singer-with-a-haunting-voice-dies-at-88/2014/06/13/270725b6-48c3-11e3-a196-3544a03c2351_story.html http://jazztimes.com/articles/132294-singer-jimmy-scott-dies-at-88 Quote
Cyril Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 "Little" Jimmy Scott...R.I.P. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYG55t2JcIA Quote
duaneiac Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Since I had not heard any news of him performing in a while, I wondered if his health was in decline. I only got to hear him perform once and it was an unforgettable experience. He sang a version of "Some One To Watch Over Me" that would make grown men weep. His autobiography is well worth reading. May he now find the peace that was often denied him in this world. Quote
Mike Schwartz Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 Like many here I'm sure, just LOVED Jimmy Scott! Got to spend some time with him on a couple of occasions....taped an interview for radio. My daughter spent and entire evening with him back stage in SF a number of years ago that she'll never forget.. RIP Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 Wow, a true unique voice has left us. RIP Jimmy. Time to spin some of your music. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 I chuckled at this. "Sold only 49,000 copies." I think most jazz artists would love to have sales of 49 thousand. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jimmy Scott, a jazzman with an ethereal man-child voice who found success late in life with the Grammy-nominated album "All the Way," has died. He was 88. Scott died in his sleep Thursday at his Las Vegas home, said his wife, Jeanie Scott. He had battled health problems stemming from a genetic hormone deficiency and had been under the care of a home nurse, she said. His 1992 comeback album "All the Way" sold only 49,000 copies in the U.S. but earned him cult-like popularity in Europe and Asia, particularly Japan, where he often sold out performances. http://LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jimmy Scott, a jazzman with an ethereal man-child voice who found success late in life with the Grammy-nominated album "All the Way," has died. Head Man Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 Damn! Coincidently I recently bought a Japanese re-issue of his album "The Source" which I've been playing continously. It's wonderful. His passing even got a mention on the BBC Radio 4 news this morning...that doesn't happen very often! Who will do the really slow tempos now? Andy Bey, but ......... ....not like Jimmy! Quote

JSngry Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 I think Shirley Horn & Jimmy Scott had the slowest tempos. That stuff was magic, and I bet they took it with them. Quote

AllenLowe Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 (edited) to me Mingus was the king of slow; Scott was too maudlin for me. Edited June 15, 2014 by AllenLowe Quote
