Mark Stryker Posted May 24, 2014 Report Posted May 24, 2014 (edited) Folks, I have seen my share of musical prodigies over the years, but I have never seen a kid like this. Good God. 9-year-old drummer Kojo Roney (son of saxophonist Antoine Roney), channeling Tony Williams, while sitting in w/organist Joey DeFrancesco in New York a couple weeks ago and playing "Seven Steps to Heaven." The video comes from drummer George Fludas' phone (and posted here with permission). George was on the gig, though I think the kid is getting ready to steal it. Like Joey D says at the end, "No matter how old he is, he's bad!" https://www.dropbox.com/s/julyo6rrchhrwrf/VID_20140513_230913_574.mp4 Edited May 24, 2014 by Mark Stryker Quote
Mark Stryker Posted April 3, 2015 Author Report Posted April 3, 2015 I see in today's New York Times that Kojo Roney is leading a three-night residency next week at Jack in Brooklyn. Nice of his father to let his 10-year-old son stay up past his bedtime to play the gigs. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted April 3, 2015 Author Report Posted April 3, 2015 Yeah -- that link was posted a while ago. I just bumped the thread after seeing Times blurb about Kojo's residency. Here's another clip. Cell phone recording from behind drums and phasing a big off but you get the idea. He was 9 here, sitting in at the Vanguard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4E1jF9l-Oo Quote
