l p Posted May 12, 2014 Report Posted May 12, 2014 another good thing about the 71 london sessions is that there are no horns. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 12, 2014 Author Report Posted May 12, 2014 I'm surprised you have 90 % of Monk's commercially released stuff and have never heard these. F My listening is based on what I encounter. This is where I am today. Surely you 'encountered' reports of these recordings, they aren't exactly obscure. I have not, so I though it would be appropriate to inquire about them on a jazz-focused message board of which I am a member. I have a room full of LPs and CDs, and I can't know everything. Thanks for understanding. Carry on encountering... I shall, and likewise! Quote
mjzee Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Finally got to listen to disc 1 of this: It's the recent Japanese release of the Black Lion material, on Muzak records (I kid you not), licensed by Black Lion. The complete session on two discs: one solo, one with the McKibbon/Blakey trio. Sound quality is gorgeous. I've owned this material in the past (on crackly US Black Lion vinyl), and it was such a delight to hear it again. Monk sounds spry and relaxed. I've never heard the outtakes before, and the last track on disc one struck me as something in another category. Titled "Chordially (Improvisation)," I'm not sure there's anything like it in the Monk canon. It reminded me of Debussy. Can't wait to hear disc two. Quote

Tour de Force is also on the legendary double album from the Giants of Jazz. Monk seemed to be inspired by this nice Dizzy Gillespie Composition with the descending chords. All solos are beautiful on this tune and I love Blakey´s drumwork. The most fascinating thing about Blakey is that you can hear how he plays in different manner for each soloist, he plays another way for a trombone solo than for a saxophone solo and so on. Even after his hearing got very bad he still had that fantastic way to adapt his playing to the instrument that´s soloing. Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 31, 2018 Report Posted October 31, 2018 are all Black Lion recordings of superior sound q? Quote

Oh thanks, didn´t know that. In general I hear from what source the changes are coming, but it seems in this case I havent´ heard the source, or didn´t remember it. But Monk knew all the swing tunes. I think I have Jeepers Creepers on an old Tommy Dorsey record, should listen to it again to compare it with "Tour de Force". At least: If someone might "call" Jeepers Creepers" at least I would know the changes from "Tour de Force"..... Quote

JSngry Posted October 31, 2018 Report Posted October 31, 2018 fwiw, that Hi-Lo's cut was from their Starlite period, which for me greatly excelled what they did on Columbia. Not that the Columbia stuff was bad or anything, just that the Starlite stuff was at time nothing short of audacious. There were four albums and to get them on CD might require some hunting. Here's some of it: https://www.amazon.com/Musical-Thrill-Hi-Los/dp/B000FVQPVC/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1541006613&sr=1-1&keywords=hi-lo%27s Quote
