I was just listening to the 1962 "Sahib Shihab and the DRJG" album I recently acquired, and was surprised by the quality of his orignal tunes and arrangements, not to mention his playing.

I did a search here, and found he had no page. Surely, this must be an oversight...

He was an awesome musician. I like what I have of his, the Savoy material, the "Summer Dawn" album, one on Black Lion . . . all the appearances with the Clarke Boland Big Band.

Big fan here! CBBB indeed - one of the mainstays, also on plenty of small group dates!

Not quite sure if it really was the very first time I heard him, but I totally love his solo on "Bakai", the opener of Coltrane's first album!

A complete musician!

One of those guys who always played with a lot of character, regardless of the setting / circumstances or whichever instrument he happened to be playing. Most fond of his baritone sax work... but his solos on this record are uniformly "Whoa? Who? What?" in tone, phrasing (such snap!) and conception. Shihab was not one to keep slow company, either.

What others have said. I like Sahib's Jazz Party on Fontana/Debut, which was reissued as Conversations on Polydor (via Alan Bates I think).

Companionship is pretty excellent as far as the CBBB-related dates go. That Danish Radio Jazzgroup LP is very nice too.

Not exactly like it, but the Shihab material here has been on cd on these two releases in the Savoy/Denon series. I have 'em and really like 'em.

I think there's at least one more session on the 2-fer than what's on those two single releases. I sold the 2-fer years ago, so can't directly check it.

To answer my own question, I found the session that produced Hum-Bug and Southern Exposure. I don't recognize the album, though:
