sgcim Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 I was just listening to the 1962 "Sahib Shihab and the DRJG" album I recently acquired, and was surprised by the quality of his orignal tunes and arrangements, not to mention his playing. I did a search here, and found he had no page. Surely, this must be an oversight... Quote
jazzbo Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 He was an awesome musician. I like what I have of his, the Savoy material, the "Summer Dawn" album, one on Black Lion . . . all the appearances with the Clarke Boland Big Band. Quote
king ubu Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 Big fan here! CBBB indeed - one of the mainstays, also on plenty of small group dates! Not quite sure if it really was the very first time I heard him, but I totally love his solo on "Bakai", the opener of Coltrane's first album! A complete musician! Quote
Joe Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 One of those guys who always played with a lot of character, regardless of the setting / circumstances or whichever instrument he happened to be playing. Most fond of his baritone sax work... but his solos on this record are uniformly "Whoa? Who? What?" in tone, phrasing (such snap!) and conception. Shihab was not one to keep slow company, either. mjzee Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 I always enjoyed this Savoy twofer: Nothing quite like it is currently available on CD. The liner notes were excellent, too; they noted that Shihab wasn't much into self-promotion. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 What others have said. I like Sahib's Jazz Party on Fontana/Debut, which was reissued as Conversations on Polydor (via Alan Bates I think). Companionship is pretty excellent as far as the CBBB-related dates go. That Danish Radio Jazzgroup LP is very nice too. Quote

Not exactly like it, but the Shihab material here has been on cd on these two releases in the Savoy/Denon series. I have 'em and really like 'em. Quote

Not exactly like it, but the Shihab material here has been on cd on these two releases in the Savoy/Denon series. I have 'em and really like 'em. I think there's at least one more session on the 2-fer than what's on those two single releases. I sold the 2-fer years ago, so can't directly check it. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) Maybe so. They're all however here: Jazz Sahib - Complete Sextets Sessions 1956-1957 (2-cd Set) http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/jazz_sahib_-_complete_sextets_sessions_1956-1957_2-cd_set-cd-4937.html Edited May 1, 2014 by jazzbo Quote
mjzee Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 There's also this mp3 compilation: We'll ignore the dreadful cover art, shall we? It presents, in jumbled up fashion, tracks from the two Savoys pictured above, 6 tracks from Mort Herbert's Night People, and 2 tracks I can't source (Hum-Bug and Southern Exposure). Quote

To answer my own question, I found the session that produced Hum-Bug and Southern Exposure. I don't recognize the album, though: Eddie Bert (trombone) Sahib Shihab (baritone saxophone) Tommy Flanagan (piano) Kenny Burrell (guitar) Carl Pruitt (bass) Elvin Jones (drums) NYC, May 17, 1956 CO55945 Hum-Bug Epic LN 3339 CO55946 Southern Exposure - * Epic LN 3339; Fontana (E) TFL 5008 Hank Jones/Conte Candoli/Milt Hinton/Sahib Shihab/Ronnie Bright/Barry Galbraith/Jimmy Cleveland/Gene Quill/Ray Bryant/Osie Johnson - After Hours Jazz Quote

Peter Friedman Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 I highly recommend this recording that has some fine playing by Sahib. Art Farmer Quintet - Manhattan - Soul Note With Sahib Shihab, Kenny Drew, Mads Vinding, Ed Thigpen Quote
soulpope Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 I enjoy this later session. Highly recommended !!! Quote
Afric Pepperbird Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I just listened to this for the first time, and was very impressed! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Yeah, that Gilson number on Futura is pretty interesting although I don't really put it in with other Shihab LPs. Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I used to confuse him with Shadi Hafi. You'd have had better luck with Shafi Hadi. Quote
