I need to get a Kindle of some sort, I think, because I want to read a book (Peter Pullman's Bud Powell bio, "Wail") that is available only in that format and figure that once I get a Kindle, I'll put it to good use otherwise down the road. So, any thoughts about which Kindle to get? Bells and whistles not needed, unless someone can tell me why I do need/might enjoy them.

Larry, I am a regular at mobileread.com.

They have a forum called "Which one should I buy?"

The folks there will be able to answer all of your questions.

It appears to me that the most popular Kindle is the PaperWhite, but whether that is any better for you than the $69 Basic is something you will have to decide for yourself.

I've had the Kindle Keyboard for 3 years or so, and just recently got the Paperwhite model when Amazon put them on sale for $99. The Keyboard is closest to the basic $69 Kindle model, at least in terms of the reading experience. The Paperwhite's lighting feature is very nice, you can control the backlighting on it,but it does not have the feel of reading from a monitor or a tablet. I preferred the button controls on the Keyboard model over the touch screen controls of the Paperwhite, but the lighting makes the Paperwhite a more desirable model for me.

If you have an iPad, you can use the free Kindle app.

No, just an IPhone 4 and my IMac computer.

There's a Kindle app for the iMac (free, available through the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kindle/id405399194?mt=12) and for the iPhone; I wouldn't recommend the iPhone app, as the small screen size makes reading a bit tedious.

Thanks mjzee. I just downloaded the app, downloaded "Wail" for $9.99, and am in business. A separate Kindle might make sense later on for vacations and the like.

OK, so now, for convenience sake, install the Kindle app for your iPhone. You can read the same copy of Wail on both devices. Having it on the iPhone would allow you to look up something on a moment's notice; might be handy.

I got the iPhone App and also the PC program, but am seriously thinking of getting a basic Paperwhite.

Seems convenient and would be nice for reading on the couch or in bed. I don't need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive version or a full-on tablet, though.

Off topic: I got a printed (signed) copy of Wail from Jazz Record Center, NYC. I don't really like reading on my Kindle Fire.
