As many had feared when he went into the hospital, Gabriel Garcia Marquez passed away at the age of 87. My understanding is that his health had been poor for some time.

I'm certainly a big fan of his work, though I will admit he inspired a lot of really lousy followers who used magic realism indiscriminately.

Of his major works, I like them in roughly this order:

The Autumn of the Patriarch

No One Writes to the Colonel

Collected Short Stories

One Hundred Years of Solitude

Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Love in the Time of Cholera

In Evil Hour

I've actually never read The General in His Labyrinth (and some of his later story collections), and I'm going to start The General this weekend.

Obviously everyone has been quoting this opening line from "One Hundred Years of Solitude", but it's so good and maybe it will convince someone to discover this author:

"Muchos años después, frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, el coronel Aureliano Buendía había de recordar aquella tarde remota en que su padre lo llevó a conocer el hielo."

"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Obviously everyone has been quoting this opening line from "One Hundred Years of Solitude", but it's so good and maybe it will convince someone to discover this author: . . .

Similarly, I abridged the last paragraph of the book (English only)---purposefully and very slightly, with omissions indicated, of course---and posted the result on another message board, here:

the (abridged) last paragraph of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

(1967; translated by Gregory Rabassa)
