GA Russell Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I'm sorry to hear this. I had an album of his when I was in college which he did for Cal Tjader's Skye label. I think he was also on a favorite album of mine, Cal Tjader Plugs In. RIP. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 RIP...... just reported this on the my NYJW blog twitter Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 RIP. I wonder how many listeners in the US were introduced to Latin music through Armando's contributions to George Shearing records. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 A good amount. Those Shearing Latin records were fun listening. Quote
JSngry Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 I heard him with Santana first, a bit before I realized that George Shearing made anything other than easy-listening elevator-jazz records. But the path did lead back. That's a long life he had playing a lot of music with a lot of fine, fine players. Hard to say who was more blessed, him or his listeners. Maybe that's the point, to have it all even out like that. RIP, and muchas gracias, con el máximo respeto. Quote
duaneiac Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) I saw him at a tribue to Cal Tjader concert maybe 9 or 10 years ago and he was still playing great then. May he rest in peace. Edited April 16, 2014 by duaneiac Quote
mikeweil Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 R.I.P. Duncan Reid told me Armando was the only Tjader alumnus that refused to be interviewed - he pretty much withdrew from the public after he stopped playing with Santana. The sessions released on the 10' LP Cal Tjader Plays Afroc-Cuban, reissued on Los Ritmos Calientes, were recorded under Peraza's name, but released as a Tjader album, much to his disapointment - Tjader had no influence on this. We corrected this in the discography by listing Peraza as a co-leader. He was the top bongo player on the scene, along with Buyu (José Mangual, sr.) - with him, the great specialized bongo masters are all gone, I'm afraid. Hear him soloing on Big Noise From Winetka on the LP mentioned, on on Santana's Borboletta - unsurpassed. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 I saw him with Santana in 1976, and his playing was a highlight of the concert. He was very memorable. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 RIP, such a great player, familiar with him thru Santana, gotta check out the other stuff Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 I know so little about rock music. I had no idea he even played with Santana. I knew him as the "master of Afro-Cuban interpretation" from all of the Shearing albums. Quote
7/4 Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 He was on Alice Coltrane n Santana- Illuminations. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 He was on Alice Coltrane n Santana- Illuminations. That is the only Santana album I own, purchased because of Alice. I will have to re-spin this one soon. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 7/4, the recent Blu Ray "Invitation to Illumination" of Carlos' with McLaughlin is worth it too. John revisits "Vashkar" and "Vuelta Abajo" in a quartet with Benny Rietveld, David K. Matthews on organ, and Cindy Blackman, and it's smoking. They pretty much cover the entire "Love, Devotion, Surrender" album too. It's the first concert I've seen on video, where Santana hasn't been cut to ribbons by another guitarist, like Buddy Guy, or McLaughlin himself on the "Hymns for Peace" video. Quote
