I'm done and finished ... anyone else?

I figured why fight the crowds of old men pawing through the jazz section, so I went to my favorite record store ... the only record store ... a little 'early'.

Walked out with a James Cotton Vanguard LP, Cut You Loose, for $5 and just like that, Record Store Day was over.

Anyone else thinking like me or is everyone going to wait until Record Store Day actually arrives?

No, used for $5 with a cover that could be generously described as VG-.

Don't care about the Wes Montgomery Record Store Day releases; I can't fathom why someone would pay so much for something that isn't even the full release. I'll happily wait for the CDs.

Nah, though I could try to head down to Fort Lauderdale next weekend and plunder the stock of the *other* record store left in south Florida, before it gets raided by the other old fogeys. But I prefer the one I went to on Saturday, I was telling the owner how much I appreciate the fact that he cleans his stock before putting it out. Makes it so much easier to judge condition, I wish it were SOP.

As a record store owner, I think I can say that all this Record Store Day stuff is a load of crap. Just about all of the "exclusive" releases are overpriced false collectables, and are mostly snapped up by speculators looking to flip them on Ebay or elsewhere. When I have callers and walk-ins looking for this stuff (and these are people who do not come in the rest of the year) and walking when they don't see it, I think I can safely say it's largely a big hustle.

Agreed. I avoid record store day like the plague. False collectables indeed...

However, no offense to you as a record store owner, I've pretty much stopped going to the record stores around my area at least for the last few years and I've think they've pretty much been dead for longer then that.

It used to be fun finding hidden gems in the racks...now if you even are lucky enough to find something good it's priced at or above "eBay" prices - usually above!

Didn't know about this..I still have all their 7"s - anything special about this reissue?

Did you ever hear the Butterglove 7"? That was cool too..

Never heard Butterglove, oddly.

The Breadwinner LP compiles the 7"s (and was previously on CD though that's long out of print). I used to have one of them but for whatever reason, that's all. Too much to keep track of.

Didn't see this one mentioned- Sun Ra Outer Spaceways Incorporated got a reissue by ORG Music for Record Store Day. I prefer the original Black Lion artwork, but I'm happy to own a copy on vinyl.

Yeah, seems to be the store owner consensus. Plus, the whole "approval" thing is quite a load of bunk from what I understand. Stores seem to do more business than at any other time of year, which is kind of crazy and though a record-breaking weekend is great, wouldn't it be nice if people came back every payday to grab a few cool titles? The latter is what would keep stores in business.

As I understand it the margin on the RSD releases is minimal. Not much profit for the record store as I understand it.

Maybe true - but I know for a fact my buddies' store in Austin, End of an Ear, sells so much that day that it really helps their yearly margin. Good for them.

That's a good store - I got a lot from there when I was over there.

A good store will do better than an average one in this kind of event, I'd guess.
