SMB1968 Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Gabriel Solis, Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall (Oxford U.P. 2014). Mine just arrived, so I haven't had time to really dig into it, but looks good so far. http://global.oup.com/academic/product/thelonious-monk-quartet-with-john-coltrane-at-carnegie-hall-9780199744367?q=solis&lang=en&cc=us Quote
awesome_welles Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Would love to hear what you think of it when you've had time to get into it a bit. I remember flipping through another of the OUP jazz books in that series (Miles' second great quintet) which looked really interesting also. I'm guessing this book also has detailed musical analysis like the Miles Davis one? Quote
SMB1968 Posted April 3, 2014 Author Report Posted April 3, 2014 Yes, it's primarily an analysis of each song on the album. It is great for those of us who can sit down at the piano and plunk along with the transcriptions and descriptions of Monk's moves, but I can also see where non-musicians wouldn't get much out of the volume.
