Larry Kart Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Mark Sheldon reports on Facebook that Med Flory has died. Quite a guy. Here's a brief thread about one aspect of Med: Also, Marc Meyers did a nice interview with him: http://www.jazzwax.com/2009/07/interview-med-flory-part-1.html Quote
BillF Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Sorry to hear of his passing - he provided some great music. I have almost everything Supersax recorded, as well as this fine big band reissue: Quote
CraigP Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks for the link to the interview - interesting stuff. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Was lucky enough to catch him live some years ago. Came across as quite an enthusiastic guy and fine musician, of course. RIP. Quote

Interesting Sidewinder! More details? It was at one of those Long Beach Festivals - Med Flory was in pretty well most of the groups that long weekend. I remember him in a recreation of Art Pepper + 11, a 'Birth of the Cool' recreation and also in a front line with Conte Candoli (Lighthouse All Stars?). In fact, thinking about it he was a hugely enthusiastic participant (along with Bill Perkins) that weekend. Glad I got to see it ! I have quite a few photos of that event but only on hard copy unfortunately. Med is on quite a few of them. Edited March 15, 2014 by sidewinder Quote

BillF Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0283095/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm I like the way IMDb relegates Supersax to the Trivia section! But what a filmography he had! How did he find time for the music? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 I spent about a week around him when we recorded our Warne Marsh date with the SuperSax rhythm section. On Sunday night, last day of the gig, Med slid into a booth with Lou Levy, Jake Hanna and me. He said "So you're the guy wearing out my best players" and slapped me on the back. A very warm guy. Peter Friedman Posted March 17, 2014 Report Posted March 17, 2014 Saw Med with a late version of the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and also with one of the later Supersax groups. He not only was a good player, but had a sparkling style in his role as leader of Supersax when speaking to the audience. Quote
Jim R Posted March 17, 2014 Report Posted March 17, 2014 http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0283095/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm It would have been much easier to list the tv shows that he never appeared on (and I think I might be serious). Anyway, I remember him as an actor, and a good one. I never knew he was a musician until some time in the late 80's. Quote
