I believe the source is the same as the Uptown Hank Mobley set. I have a list of the "Ozzie Cadena holdiings" somewhere but can't locate it right now. I think NYC and Birdland are red herrings.

As I understand it, Uptown has the original tapes but Ozzie gave a dub to Phil Schaap and it was broadcast. This issue must have been taken off the air.

Once again a bootlegger foils and kills a better sounding recording.

Thanks Chuck. Does this mean that Uptown will now pull the plug on their reissue? That would totally suck.

I would pull the plug. Personnel is incorrect - Lloyd Buchanan, bass; Lloyd Turner, drums according to my notes.

The version that was/is in circulation has Jimmy Schenk as well, no idea where the info comes from, I don't think I've ever heard any radio announcements coming with it ... (and that version surely is the only source these bootleggers have access to).

These releases suck big time ... I mean I love dime and it's rules are good in my book - the downside is there's no way to keep the bootleggers out - there have been plenty of releases by the likes or RLR, Gambit et al. taken straight from sets presented on dime. Economically, releasing these boots works, I guess, because no one other than the manufacturer needs to get paid anything ... but dammit, I really loathe these releases!

I don't have the new release. I have a CDR which was provided by a friend at O.

Don't think I'll purchase the new one unless the sound on the bass and drums is improved. Proeminent to the point of being obtrusive on what I have.

Great blowing date in any case!

I have it like this:
Live at the Pic. (The Picadilly, Newark) September 14, 1953

Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, Jimmy Schenk, Lloyd Turner

You go To My Head

Hackensack

Things We Did last Summer

I'll Remember April

Lou's Blues

Lloyd Buchanan replaces Jimmy Schenk

Billie's Bounce and The Way You Look tonight

Lou tells me this was his gig.

Nice playing, ATROCIOUS sound. Buyer beware,I bought this and feel ripped off ! Horace sounds like he's in another room playing and the mic sounds like it was covered by a blanket !!

Always be weary of those Spaniards !:tdown

I can understand that you are weary, but better be WARY, isn't it? ;)

As for the description of the sound, sounds like some Boris Rose live recording tape to me. ;)

Is it a proven fact that FAR better-sounding copies of that recording are in existence? In that case there still should be a market ... particularly in view of the artists involved and how so many collectors drool about minuscule and highly subjective sound improvements of the umpteenth remastering of this or that BN recording reissue, for example ...
