jlhoots Posted October 11, 2014 Report Posted October 11, 2014 Just read this thread for the first time and succumbed to the impulse to place an order at jazz messengers for: NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE - CONSEQUENCES TED CURSON - URGE MARION BROWN - JUBA-LEE NEW YORK ART QUARTET -MOHAWK There is a reason I am can never dig myself out of the hole ... Fellow wacko supports your purchase! +1 Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 au contraire, there's another Curson that Black Lion didn't issue - Urge (w/ Ervin, Jimmy Woode and Edgar Bateman) - and it's a hell of a record. Wish i had that one! t have tears for dolphy which I know is the Fontana date Quote
sidewinder Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 Indeed! Has that one ever been on CD? Yes, it came out as one of the Japanese Fontana reissues with Marte Roling artwork... I have a copy. I've got a Japan Fontana LP with this sleeve art somewhere... Quote
David Ayers Posted October 12, 2014 Author Report Posted October 12, 2014 Urge is a piano less quartet with Booker Ervin. I have the Japanese Fontana LP. I'd say the LP is maybe findable but the CD no way. If you google it I'm certain you'll turn up a download... Quote
Head Man Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 (edited) I found my copy in a long-gone record store in Manchester. I just wandered in there during a break in the conference I was attending and there it was..... serendipity. I also picked up copies of "New York Contemporary Five - Consequences" & "New York Art Quartet - Mohawk" at the same time. I already owned vinyl copies of all three and was happy for a CD 'upgrade' (as I saw it at the time!)... I later sold the vinyl for not a particularly high price. Ah, if only I'd known then what I know now.... Edited October 12, 2014 by Head Man Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 Are any of the Dutch Fontanas super-expensive? I thought they topped out at around $100 (which is 'expensive' but not stratospheric). I have all of them and none were more than that. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 All my Fontanas in this series are the Japanese ones save for Brown's "Juba-lee" which is a mint dutch original. I think I got it for around $60 over 15 years ago...no idea what these go for now as I'm happy with my Japanese issues... Quote
JSngry Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 As of now, jazzmessengers.com lists 6 titles in this purportedly Japanese series on the "Cool Music" label, whereas HMV Japan still lists just 4. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Curiously, those six were never issued by DA Music on CD before, whereas titles like Touching, Anatomy of a South African Village, and Nefertiti were. Quote
JSngry Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Also, the Urge cover I've seen looks like this: Is this a UK issue? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Also, the Urge cover I've seen looks like this: Is this a UK issue? Never had that one but all the "Jazz Life" Fontanas I have seen were manufactured by Philips in the Netherlands. Quote
David Ayers Posted November 22, 2014 Author Report Posted November 22, 2014 Only have the Japanese LP of Urge which has the Marte Roling cover. Quote

Never had that one but all the "Jazz Life" Fontanas I have seen were manufactured by Philips in the Netherlands. Post-Rolling-cover, I'd guess? Curiously, those six were never issued by DA Music on CD before, whereas titles like Touching, Anatomy of a South African Village, and Nefertiti were. Alan Bates/Debut Records comes into this at some point, I'd have to think. Had not seen this one before: Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Bates was the originator of all this stuff. Quote
JSngry Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 All of it? JCOA, NYAQ, none of that was initially self-produced? Was not aware of that. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Also, the Urge cover I've seen looks like this: Is this a UK issue? Never had that one but all the "Jazz Life" Fontanas I have seen were manufactured by Philips in the Netherlands. Post-Rolling-cover, I'd guess? Both UK and Dutch had the Jazz Life cover. Röling design only appeared much later on the Japanese issues, assume it was like Back to the Tracks in this respect. Same with Blood (Bley). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 All of it? JCOA, NYAQ, none of that was initially self-produced? Was not aware of that. Some of them may have been self-produced but Bates was the entry point. He is an important guy with much respect from me. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 Really wish that the Bill Dixon 2LP had come out, though apparently Bill canceled the project as the money wasn't right. They would have been recordings from Bill's tapes, including (IIRC) the concert from Four Days in December. Great band/s with Rashied Ali, Reggie Johnson, Robin Kenyatta, maybe Gary Porter on trombone (?)... I've heard bits and pieces of this stuff and it's heavy! Quote
colinmce Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 Oof. Who owns that stuff? Would they ever release it? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 I know some of it is in Bill's archives. Quote
JSngry Posted November 25, 2014 Report Posted November 25, 2014 Was Dixon going/trying to release it through Fontana? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 25, 2014 Report Posted November 25, 2014 In '66, yeah, Bates approached him to be part of the series and he wanted to release quintet/sextet material from '64-'65. It was either going to be a double LP or two separate volumes. Quote
JSngry Posted November 25, 2014 Report Posted November 25, 2014 That would have sealed the deal for that series, afaic. Best unified collective documentation of time/place HOF, for sure. Pretty damn close to that already. Quote
