peterintoronto Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 Dropping in to mention that I'm listening to Marion Brown's 'Juba-Lee' as I type. Love the sound. About as good as one can expect with this material. The covers are too flimsy to be of Japanese origin, and I do suspect these to be bootlegs. Nonetheless, glad I bought them. Quote
jlhoots Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 I've listened to all 4 now & I'm fine with them. BTW, I just received what apparently is a monthly catalogue in the mail from Jazz Messengers. Kinda nice. Quote

king ubu Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Totally forgot about these ... but regarding pseudo mini LPs with pseudo OBIs, I bouth Helen Merrill's wonderful Metrojazz album in such an edition ... really silly, no clue whom they want to fool. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 The original issue of the JCO was a gatefold with nice photos and a lengthy poem by Paul Haines. The Japanese LP reissue didn't have these (just a single-sleeve). I doubt that this bootleg will either. Hopefully legit reissues happen at some point though I'm not holding my breath. Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Regardless of the provenance of these releases, it's all essential music so my advice would be to go for them. These four albums are probably the pick of the bunch from the Fontana series and have never (I think) been available on other labels. Some of the others such as the Dollar Brand and Paul Bley are available as re-issues on other labels such as Black Lion. Like Jason says above, they're likely to be copies of the original Japanese re-issue sues so should sound fine. Even the Japanese re-issues are not the highest of fi. If you already have either the original Japanese re-issues or the decent sounding CD-R copies from DMG then why bother. i have the Curson on black lion Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 au contraire, there's another Curson that Black Lion didn't issue - Urge (w/ Ervin, Jimmy Woode and Edgar Bateman) - and it's a hell of a record. Quote
king ubu Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Indeed! Has that one ever been on CD? Quote

jlhoots Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Urge is available on CD from Jazz Messengers - or is there a different Urge, or are you boycotting these "issues"?? Quote
David Ayers Posted October 8, 2014 Author Report Posted October 8, 2014 Oh. Well I don't need the CD, I meant for the benighted masses... Quote
Head Man Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 (edited) Indeed! Has that one ever been on CD? Yes, it came out as one of the Japanese Fontana reissues with Marte Roling artwork... I have a copy. Edited October 8, 2014 by Head Man Quote
felser Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 I think I need it. Getting to the point where many ideal reissues are not going to happen in my lifetime. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 I've never seen a Dutch Fontana with her artwork, just the Jazz Life cover. The Roling version seems to be a Japan-only thing. Bley's Blood is the same way. Quote

Victor Christensen Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 I have The New York Contemporary Five in a remastered 64 bit from the original mastertape on the Storyville Label, you can find it on Amazon under Archie Shepp, it's still available. Vic Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 Different music - the Storyville (ex-Polydor, exx-Sonet) was recorded live in Copenhagen, while the Fontana was recorded in the studio in New York. Quote
