Apart from "Ask Me Now" does anyone know whether either of his other two Impulse recordings ("The College Concert...." and "The Spirit of '76") have ever been legitimately re-issued on CD?

The Spirit of '76 can be downloaded from iTunes. You can find it buried in the Oliver Nelson box but can chose just the Pee Wee cuts. I've never been able to find a cd of The College Concert and finally did my own digital transfer from a fairly clean Lp.

I'm probably wrong, it probably has NOT been out on cd legitimately. Too bad there are no Selects any longer, if there were any extra recorded material for these that would be a nice Mosaic Select.

Thanks everyone, I'd forgotten that "The Spirit of '76" was in the Oliver Nelson Mosaic box.

The reason I was asking was because "The College Concert..." is paired with "New Groove" in a release by one of those Andorran labels and I wondered what it's provenance might be. I know "New Groove" has been previously re-issued by Collectables but I wasn't sure where "The College Concert.." might have come from.

I like both albums so I might just treat myself to this two-fer.

Chuck,

Do you have any additional information you can pass along about this? Bob Hilbert's discography shows one unissued tune ("Goose Pimples") from that Impulse session with no information about any alternates. There's the Columbia material and also the material that came out on the MB (presumably for "Marshall Brown") demo. Hilbert shows lots of unissued material from that session, but I don't imagine the Universal would have access to the Columbia material or to the Marshall Brown material.

Was the abandoned "Ask Me Now" just the small group, or was it going to be the three Impulse albums, perhaps with some unissued material from those sessions?

At one point Universal assembled a 2 or 3 disc version of Ask Me Now and the chickened out.

Chuck,

any more specific infos on this seemingly substantial lot of unreleased material ?

I wanted to say I couldn't find any info on any additional material in a box set prepared by Universal - like unissued tracks from the College Concerts. Lord doesn't list anything but the one previously unreleased track mentioned above. For that reason, I doubt that such a box set was released. I sure would like to hear it ....

Nobody said box set. I haven't been able to shake the info loose. A friend has a copy of the extra quartet material, hasn't listened to recently and can't lay his hands on it right now. He said he thought the "sameness" of the takes, material and group sound killed the project. I will keep on him about it to get details.

Thanks for the update Chuck. Some of us are obviously tantalized by the prospect of more music from the 60s by Russell. However, given the nature of the group, I can believe that there might be a certain sameness with alternate takes.

In any case, any details that become available would be appreciated.

Just realized that nobody's mentioned the George Wein impulse! album. All conceptual notions of/fascinations with moderninity aside, that's my favorite Pee Wee on impulse!
