GA Russell Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Here's something you might find interesting. In some cases, it is the marketing rather than the candy that was influential. Any disagreements? http://newsfeed.time.com/2014/02/18/13-most-influential-candy-bars-of-all-time/?iid=sl-article-moreontime Quote

JSngry Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I don't see PayDay, I am not convinced of that list. That's the one I'll eat even when not eating candy! Quote
BeBop Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I don't see PayDay, I am not convinced of that list. That's the one I'll eat even when not eating candy! A fine choice. But ineligible- only CHOCOLATE bars. We interviewed candy experts and historians to determine which bars made the biggest impact on the chocolate-bar industry—and the world at large. So much for Abba Zabba Quote
JSngry Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 But, but, but...Pay-Day (in its original recipe) was the...Bill Barron of candy bars. Quote
Matthew Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) Hershey's Chocolate Bar will forever be number one in my heart, and please, do not desecrate it with nuts -- nuts to that! Edited February 22, 2014 by Matthew Quote
kinuta Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) How could they possibly omit Mars bars ! This is my favourite though - Edited February 22, 2014 by kinuta Quote
Mark Stryker Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) But, but, but...Pay-Day (in its original recipe) was the...Bill Barron of candy bars. This might be the single greatest post in the history of this board: The ultimate expression of arcane jazz knowledge/geekdom melded with an obscure popular cultural reference. Two great tastes that go great together, all wrapped up and delivered in the nougat of aesthetic superiority. Bravo!!! Edited February 22, 2014 by Mark Stryker Quote
Leeway Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 About half the ones on the list made sense to me, but the others I have not even heard of, and I am a confirmed chocoholic. Chicken dinner?! Grenada? Scharffen??? That last must be a ringer. Surely, M&Ms should be on the list. And how about Chunky? Quote
uli Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Clearly the Ragusa belongs on the list Quote
GA Russell Posted February 23, 2014 Author Report Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) My first thought was that #1 should be the invention of milk chocolate, which the site says was Nestle. My second thought was that #2 should be the plain Hershey bar, for marketing reason. And my third thought is that #3 should be the first commercially successful bar to be made of faux chocolate, referred to on the wrapper as "chocolaty." I don't know what that was, but I'm confident that the fact that it sold well was influential. PS - Let me add a fourth. Canada had a huge bar known as Mr. Big. Now a lot of bars are sold in an extra-big size. Edited February 23, 2014 by GA Russell Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 Not being a sweets person other than Edison (I like salty/savoury) I don't pay much attention to the candy bar section. But Mr. Big's still around, I think: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadbury_Mr._Big Quote
Clunky Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 Hershey's Chocolate Bar will forever be number one in my heart, and please, do not desecrate it with nuts -- nuts to that! Perhaps it's purely down to being European but I really dislike the taste of Hershey's. Indelible - at least to me. I guess it depends on what you are used to. Me, I like Swiss chocolate. Quote
king ubu Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 and yeah, occasionally I enjoy a Ragusa ... as a kid I ate this crap (ever read how the "smoky" taste is fabricated and what's added to the "glue" in a Mars? you better don't if you want to go on eating this stuff) here's another Swiss classic that I prefer to Ragusa and that's pretty much no bull-shit as well: some background in this crappy promo that acts like it's news: http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/news/feature/The_secret_of_a_Swiss_sweet_success.html?cid=7818558 Quote
JSngry Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Made me think of this thread: Poor background singer, she looks like she caught it full force. On nights like that, no matter how much the gig pays, it ain't enough. Quote

I think it is a European vs. American thing. I remember the topic of chocolate came up once with a Belgian coworker - he absolutely could not abide American chocolate, and was quite firm in his conviction that it was crap. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 When I was in Africa Cadbury's was king. My favorite though is Fruit and Nut. It's too sweet, but what the hell. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 13, 2015 Author Report Posted January 13, 2015 Are you paid for posting these? No. LOL! Chuck, it recently dawned on me what was on your mind when you asked that (if I may say) snarky question. In fact, many of these articles of lists of recommended items are found as links at the bottom of a news page I am reading. So it is probable that somebody is getting paid for you to click on the links, but it's not me! Quote
mjzee Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Hmmm... Chunky? Almond Joy? I still miss Bonomo's Turkish Taffy. While not chocolate-coated, they did have a chocolate-flavored. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Here ya go; only banana in stock right now, but Rich usually has all four of the flavors: http://www.4noggins.com/bonomo-turkish-taffy.aspx Quote
