Homefromtheforest Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 I just watched this for the first time on YouTube last night and found it fascinating. Worth checking out for those who have not seen it and are fans of McLean. I found him to be very passionate and emotional much like his playing...great early footage too. Quote
Late Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 I like this video a lot too — I think Guy (a member here) posted a link to the Vimeo version a few years ago. I have it bookmarked, and watch it from time to time. For fans of McLean, I'd say it's required viewing! Quote
BFrank Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 Thanks for the heads up. Will check it out. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 How early is the early footage? Hope to check this out soon, more likely in a day or two than tonight. Quote
colinmce Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 I might be wrong, but I recall most of the footage being contemporaneous to the film, which is to say mid-70s. If there was archival, I'd guess it was from no earlier than 1966-67. But Jackie comes across just as loud and clear as ever. Indeed a powerful document. Quote
Cyril Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 I saw this: http://vimeo.com/12192828 Quote

There's footage from "the connection" and a short B&W clip that looks to be from the late 50s or early 60s as well Quote

Though, I suppose that Connection footage is easy enough to find outside of this doc. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 I watched it last night, terrific. Mentioned it on the twitter for the blog, too. The arguments he makes for jazz struggling to be mainstream, as a jazz educator, and the various bits of social commentary are as relevant now as they were then. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Where's the rest of THIS? Starting at the 9:46 mark in "On Mars" there's a little more than a minute-long clip of Jackie playing "What's New" with Woody Shaw circa 1967 that's incredible. I assume it's from the Five Spot but I don't know the details. There's gotta be more. Does anybody know the source, how much more there actually is and why the hell we haven't seen it by now? Rooster_Ties Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 Whoa!! Footage of Woody Shaw from the 60's!! Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 I'd always hoped some 60's footage of Woody with Horace Silver might turn up some day. Either with Joe Henderson, or better yet, with Tyrone Washington! Quote
