BeBop Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 Pony was a friend of mine, so I couldn't ever say anything negative. But I'd recommend Pony's Express over this one. Or the Blue Note Paris. Or the Barcelona. Or the one with Annie Ross (though I'm not fond of Annie Ross.) Pony Poindexter/Booker Ervin/Larry Young, Gumbo, $5.99 Any good? Not as good as you would think to my ears. Quote
JSngry Posted March 28, 2014 Report Posted March 28, 2014 Third the notion...but as a "slice of life", there's been thinner slices and worse lives, if you know what I mean. Another slice of life that might be more interesting (or "interesting") is this one here. Never really gels, but there are moments that are really, really cool...and good, too. Quote

colinmce Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 A bit obscure maybe, but sealed copies of Franz Koglmann's Schlaf Schlemmer, Schlaf Magritte on hatART are popping up at all the usual places for less than $10. A good price on a good album that was seemingly OOP. Quote

colinmce Posted April 26, 2014 Report Posted April 26, 2014 I do, plus the Random Acoustics. I have a tough time choosing a favorite, but it might actually be Perfect World. Special Detail is up there, too, but really the best one always seems to be the one I'm listening to at the moment. Quote

With Eskelin, Eubanks and Dresser Saw that band in 1999 or so and Toombow to end the set was one of the great performances I've ever witnessed live. Quote

mjzee Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I wonder when all the Roulette titles released by Blue Note will be cut out, since Universal lost the rights to them. Let's keep our eyes open. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Hell, haven't most of them been deleted from the catalogs for some time? Quote
mjzee Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Hell, haven't most of them been deleted from the catalogs for some time? I don't know; I just took a quick look at Amazon, and the Armstrong/Ellington titles are still available. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Okay, one of the Armstrong/Ellingtons is in print, but many other Roulette releases are out of print. Edited May 6, 2014 by jazzbo Quote
mjzee Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Some of the Basies are too (w/Sarah Vaughan, w/Joe Williams). Interestingly, others (Chairman of the Board, Breakfast Dance and Barbecue) now say they're from Parlophone UK. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Yeah, I just don't think there are a lot of titles in print that are going to hit clearance pricing. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 North American "ownership" of the jazz titles is hazy as I read the stories. Could still reside with BN. Quote
