Face of the Bass Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 I feel like I start too many of these threads, but I have one more. Does anybody have a line on a reasonably-priced (say, around $100) copy of the Jackie McLean box set covering mainly his 1950s Prestige sides, released I think by a European label several years ago? Thanks! Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 (edited) You mean this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-1955-1957-Jackie-McLean/dp/B000O59YU8/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1390491960&sr=1-2&keywords=jackie+mclean?You're aware that this is a European public-domain release and that the label did not have access to the original masters? They most likely sourced the material from existing CDs. Edited January 23, 2014 by J.A.W. Quote
Leeway Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 Here's a description of the box: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/complete_1955-1957_quartet,_quintet_&_sextet_sessions_6_cds_box_set-cd-4686.html Even more expensive on US Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-1955-1957-Quartet-Quintet-Sextet/dp/B000O59YU8 Has Prestige ever done a McLean box? Where do you suggest I look to get the material covered in this box? I have one or two of the old OJC releases, but that's about it. Quote
colinmce Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 You can get all of it on OJC + a couple on Fresh Sound, but most are OOP so pulling all dozen or so together would be quite pricey. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 EMI Japan put out the two non-OJC ones a few years ago and they sound fantastic. This could all be put together from better sources. . . may take a little patience. Quote
Daniel A Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 I think the title originally on Ad Lib was reissued in Japan as recently as last year. I got it for around 1000 yen. It sounds good, while that same session in the Fresh Sound box is reported to sound worse. Quote
etherbored Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 you can make a good run at the majority of these titles individually on shm-cd for 11,340 yen, which i should think would be the preferred route... http://snipurl.com/28hkjf3 Quote

Face of the Bass Posted January 23, 2014 Author Report Posted January 23, 2014 I've never ordered anything from Japan. What's the best way to go about it? Quote
etherbored Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 11,340 yen (about $110) individually?? That's a bit steep, isn't it 1,800 yen per title? that's all relative, isn't it? Quote

etherbored Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 duh... sorry, hans! maybe to some, (thinking about it from a non-collectors' perspective) that would be a sizable sum to spend on material recorded 55+ years ago. Quote
paul secor Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 If you already have a couple of OJCs, just order some of the OJCs you think you might want. Most are still in print for reasonable prices on Amazon. Unless you want to be a McLean completist, this will probably be cheaper than going for the box. If you decide to be a completist at some point, you can always go the Japanese route in the future. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 I've never ordered anything from Japan. What's the best way to go about it? I find cdjapan easy to work with and doing business with them is a success. Quote
JSngry Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Featuring "Helmo Hope" according to the description at the Fresh Sound site... We knew him as "Mo'Hell", but not everybody did. Seriously, yes, CD Japan is very easy to deal with, in every way. Quote
mjzee Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Would you consider downloads? That would be a really inexpensive way to go. Quote
JohnS Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Same here, no problems with Cd Japan Quote
Victor Christensen Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I was lucky, have been hunting it for the last two years, and 2 weeks ago did I stumble over 1 copy of it on Amazon.uk, it was an Italian dealer who had one for 50£, I ordered it right away, should ariive any day now.
