miles65 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Just announced Roland Kirk The Limelight/Verve Albums. I'm not familiair with his work. The samples sound nice. But I don't think I'll buy this as LP set. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=3006 Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Since the Mosaic set seems to be "LP only", I'm guessing Universal or their imprint Hip-O Select (or Verve Select) will release the CD version. It's just speculation on my part, of course. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Expensive enough, I've so far avoided these new Mosaic LP sets, but I might go for this one. The material is really good. I agree with the Mosaic statement, "Spirit" and "Rip, Rig and Panic" are incredible releases. Edited January 21, 2014 by jazzbo Quote
Clunky Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 This looks like it might have potential for me. I've long loved RRP but the CD sounds a little dull. It couples RRP with Edith but the other sets are unknown to me. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 "I Talk with the Spirits" is a flute only album by Kirk, and it's one of my favorites of his. This is the desert island Kirk for me, for whatever reason it keeps fascinating me. Quote
BeBop Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 I used to be a Roland Kirk completist, so I've got all this on LP and do really enjoy most of it. I Talk With Spirits, as an all-flute outing, doesn't always "do it" for me. Quote
David Ayers Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Since the Mosaic set seems to be "LP only", I'm guessing Universal or their imprint Hip-O Select (or Verve Select) will release the CD version. It's just speculation on my part, of course. That is only really two CDs worth, so I wonder if that amounts to a set, or whether there is other material that might make up further discs. Quote

Maybe they'll do a 2CD-set, maybe they'll do nothing. Quote
colinmce Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 I don't get this one. Two OK albums, two great, though widely available, albums. Why not the Mercurys instead? More consistent and largely OOP. Seems like they got it backwards. Quote
Leeway Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I suppose the cover appearance of the RRK set, as well as the other sets in this series, is supposed to mimic an archival or documentary appearance, but I don't find them attractive at all, at least as they appear on the web. Anyone like the appearance? Quote
Ed S Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Just added this to my wishlist. My wife and boys never used to know what to buy me for various occasions. Now they do. I don't have any Roland Kirk. Love that Mosaic is putting out LPs and I'll eventually pick this up if my wife and/or kids don't. Quote

sidewinder Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) I wonder if 'Slightly Latin' will be in the stereo? - I think it is only mono in the Mercury CD box set. Big fan of all these albums (including 'Slightly Latin' - totally bonkers album but in a good way) so this one goes on the 'wants' list. With LP releases such as this one, Mosaic goes back to its roots. Edited January 22, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
David Ayers Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Bit OT, but I see there are several Kirk Atlantics due on the Warner Japan wpcr series in February and March. Quote
king ubu Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Nice to see the rather neglected yet pretty wonderful Verve album getting some high-end exposure ... but these vinyl boxes really aren't for me. I'm still somewhat tempted by the Brown/Roach just because this stuff is so wonderful, but there's so much other stuff around to buy that I don't yet have, so it just makes no sense. Quote
Clunky Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 The Brown / Roach set is as good as you'd expect. Sound wise I'd find it hard to imagine that there're better editions to be found. The vinyl is flawless. Quote

The vinyl is flawless. I've all the stuff on japanese lps that sounds excellent, so I am not really interested in this set. About the Kirk, don't know, actually I've got Latin and Spirts on original stereos. Quote

My experience of near mint US EmArcy pressings has been pretty mixed, I've largely concluded that they are quite noisy. I'm sure nice Japanese pressings would be just as good. Plenty of choice for sure. Quote
tranemonk Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 No definitive news about the CD release option? Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) No definitive news about the CD release option? No. As I said I was just speculating. At the moment there's no reason whatsoever to assume there will be a CD release. Edited January 22, 2014 by J.A.W. Quote
kh1958 Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Mosaic is having a sale on the LP sets through the end of February--$10 off. Quote
