jazzbo
Me too. Excellent! Well, glad the results of the "poll" Sue had came out this way.. .
JETman
This is coming out MUCH sooner than I expected. Had no idea things were moving this fast, but I'm glad they are!
Chuck Nessa
It is called publicity. I suggest you watch Mad Men.
king ubu
SERIOUSLY NOW!?! WOW!!!!! Time to celebrate, this is great news! Too bad they don't opt for a complete set, though, but I guess that wouldn't be very feasible.
JETman
SERIOUSLY NOW!?! WOW!!!!! Time to celebrate, this is great news! Too bad they don't opt for a complete set, though, but I guess that wouldn't be very feasible. I thought Sue proposed physical options of 4 or 6 cd's. They obviously chose 6. What do you mean by "complete"?
bertrand
This is great news! If I understand correctly, the set is broken down as follows: 1) CD 1: A full concert from 4/4/64. Two long tracks were on a Fantasy CD (which I have), but there are about 30 minutes of unissued music. 2) CD 2/3: The Amsterdam concert which is wonderful (best version of 'Meditations' in my opinion). I think there was a bootleg CD, which I don't have. 3) CD 4: The Monterey concert. There was a briefly available CD version; I only have the vinyl. 4) CD 5/6: The Favorite Quintet LP plus more. I have never heard a note of this music. I'm particularly excited about this portion of the set. Too bad they don't opt for a complete set. I thought 6 CDs was the most they were going to do. What is not included? To think some people asked for downloads... Glad Brian Priestley is doing the notes. I wish he could update his book and we could all forget that ghastly Santoro book. One of the worst jazz books ever. Bertrand. Edited July 8, 2012 by bertrand
king ubu
What is not included - the rest of the amazing and wonderful European material. Some is out officially (Enja, America/Universal, Revenge/32Jazz), some is on DVD (Jazz Icons), some (I think) remains unissued or spanish-booted. The Amsterdam was on three LPs (a 2LP set and a single one) on the Ulysse label - got those (and the JWS from Monterey as well as the Japanese CD which wasn't any better sounding, I thought, but the music is amazing). But I'm not complaining, on the contrary, I'm overjoyed!
tranemonk
Just preordered. I had the bootleg CD (which I can happily get rid of now). This one was a quick pleasant surprise.
jazzbo
I've been told that the Ulysse lps and cds were legit, not sure if that's true, they were hard to find anyway. I have the cds thanks to a member here. Much thanks to a member here. There was a more recent bootleg two cd set.
Chuck Nessa
They were legit - a co-op deal between Sue and Fred Cohen. I think he still has lps to sell.
jazzbo
Which makes the Mosaic statement "only one was released on an authorized cd" not exactly right. . . . And that also infers that the Monterey cd from Japan was not legitimate. I don't care. I'm glad the set is coming out! colinmce
Due to financial difficulties I had to sell all 15 of my black boxes and all 20+ of my Selects. It was incredibly painful but I've been slowly buying back some of the individual LPs I lost and have generally decided to steer clear of buying Mosaics in the future as I feel I simply have no business buying or owning something so expensive given my situation. That said, I'm buying this. If its the only Mosaic I ever own again I'm fine with that.

sidewinder
Great news, this will be a memorable Mosaic box. I've put in a birthday pre-order. Good to see that our 'lobbying' effort and emails with Sue were to good effect. Edited July 8, 2012 by sidewinder
sidewinder
The Amsterdam was on three LPs (a 2LP set and a single one) on the Ulysse label I have the 2LP of the Amsterdam too. Will dig it out. Glad Brian Priestley is doing the notes. Amen ! And with Malcolm Addey doing the sound - dream team.
miles65
I thought 6 CDs was the most they were going to do. What is not included? Bertrand. I would have liked the partialy unissued September 18th, 1965 Monterey performance to be included. 1. The Arts Of Tatum And Freddie Webster (unissued) 2. Don't Let It Happen Here (issued on Malpaso/Warner Bros. 9-46703-2 [CD] Monterey Jazz Festival 40 legendary years.) 3. They Trespass The Land Of The Sacred Sioux (issued on Eastcoasting ECEP-1) 4. When The Saints Go Marching In (unissued) Sent an email to Mosaic to inquire about that. The Eastcoasting EP was issued by Sue. So she must have acces to this recording. Well, if it helps, consider it as an expanded reissue of that most elusive album, "My Favorite Quintet" Goes for big money, the Mosaic will be a steal by comparison! paul secor
Hm. I thought I'd be all over this one when it was announced, but looking at what's included started me thinking. I have a cd issue of the Town Hall Concert, the 2 lp Ulysse/East Coasting 2 LP set, the original 2 lp Jazz Workshop issue of Mingus at Monterey (plus a 2 lp Japanese reissue of same), and a Japanese lp reissue of My Favorite Quintet. So it looks like there's about an hour and 40 minutes of music I don't have. Tough call if I want to spend $102 + shipping, not to mention the space that the Mosaic Box will take up. Earlier on in my life, I'd have gone for it without thinking. Now, I'm not so sure.
