Michael Weiss Posted January 20, 2014 Report Posted January 20, 2014 Still hitting' with that ferocious intensity. Tonight Cobb kept the pots on on at least three fast tempos in the one set - Del Sasser, Lazybird, and something else. Are Cobb, Roy Haynes and (semi-retired) Al Harewood the oldest active jazz drummers of all time? Quote
king ubu Posted January 20, 2014 Report Posted January 20, 2014 Al Harewood is still playing? Didn't know that! These guys make Louis Hayes look like a kid Happy Birthday, Jimmy Cobb! Quote

He came up and played a short solo during a Roy Haynes concert I attended in late 2012. Talk about a night of living history. Happy Birthday, Jimmy Cobb! I've never had the opportunity to see him perform, but I hope that I get the chance. I'll have to spin some Wynton Kelly Trio later. Edited January 21, 2014 by Justin V Quote
paul secor Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Very Happy Birthday Wishes to Mr. Cobb. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Happy Birthday Jimmy Cobb. Glad to have seen him play a few times. Quote
ValerieB Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I've been fortunate enough to have heard Jimmy countless times since the '60s. I am very grateful and hope I continue enjoying his talent for many years to come. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 My impression is that Barrett Deems, best known for his time with Louis Armstrong in the '50s, was still playing regularly (and maniacally) right up until the end of his life at age 85. Our Chicago board members can furnish details or corrections. Quote
BeBop Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I'm pretty sure Sonny Igoe was 82, the last time I saw him play. Not the oldest, but I thought I'd tip my hat anyway. Quote
Cyril Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 Happy Birhday, Jimmy Cobb !!! Saw him with Nat Adderley, Vincent Herring, Rob Bargad and Walter Booker. I was young and rather shy (at that time) to ask for an autograph...and now I regret it. Quote

I just picked up We Remember Cannon last week, a live date with almost the same band (Art Resnick is the pianist). That had to have been a great show. Quote

I was just talking with a trumpet player friend of mine who was doing gigs with Percy and Earl May up until Earl's death a few years ago, and he just spoke to Percy, and he said Percy is still doing jazz gigs today.
