.:.impossible Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Here's a piece o'greaze that I don't think has been mentioned much around here: link Who is Jerry Z? Can't truss it! Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 I thought that too myself, before I heard it. He is actually a fairly progressive organist...maybe in the Larry Goldings vein? I'm not sure what his full last name is. Quote
DMP Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Got the Billy Larkin & the Delegates CD the other day - it's on some UK EMI label. Since there's almost nothing out by this group (a stray track here or there on some Blue Note compilations) (and they made at least half a dozen records for World Pacific) this is a great introduction - cuts from almost all their albums. (Dusty Groove has it.) Quote

scottb Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 For me, Shirley steals the show on VERY SAXY. I love the settings she uses! Grab your skates and give it a listen! I just got QUEEN OF THE ORGAN on Ebay! (trying to obtain the required organ discs as mandated by Alfredson!) Quote

Guest akanalog Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 i like "gambler's life" a lot! just found it used on CD after having it on vinyl for a long time. "gears" is nice too, though i like "gambler's life" better since it sounds more original to me. "breakout" is ok and i especially like the title track which has some great drumming on it-by billy cobham i think. "wild horses rock steady" is ok too though i don't need it on CD and am fine with my scratchy record. actually has some decent bob james arrangements. Quote
Big Wheel Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Ok, I know I mentioned it in a thread of its own, but greazeheads and funkateers should really give a listen to this one: "Sweet Thang" positively drips with the greaze. Quote
kenny weir Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 (edited) OK you guys are gonna love this (and apologies if this has already been mentioned): It's called Hammond Heroes - 60s R&B Organ Grooves and it's on the German lable Bear Family. Nup, it's not Jimmy Smith et al. Frankly, a lot of it is pretty rough, and as far as I can make out none of them are good enough to play the pedals. But there's lots of spirit and - yes - lots of grease. Also intriguing are the number of names in the booklet (always good with Bear Family) whose past is forgottten: Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker among them. A lof of these outfits are well known but usually only remembered for their poppier stuff, thus relegating the role of R&B and jazz in their development. WYNDER K. FROG (Organ: Mick Weaver): Jumping Jack Flash SPENCER DAVIS GROUP / Mk. I (Organ: Steve Winwood): Stevie's Groove ARTWOODS (Organ: Jon Lord): A Taste Of Honey BOBBY GRAHAM (Organ: Kenny Salmon): Zoom, Widge And Wag JULIE DRISCOLL, BRIAN AUGER & THE TRINITY (Organ: Brian Auger): Ellis Island DAVE DAVANI FOUR (Organ: Dave Davani): Working Out MANFRED MANN (Organ: Manfred Mann): One Way GRAHAM BOND ORGANISATION (Organ: Graham Bond): Wade In The Water PEDDLERS (Organ: Roy Phillips): Horses Collar GEORGIE FAME & HIS BLUE FLAMES (Organ: Georgie Fame): The In-Crowd REMO FOUR (Organ: Tony Ashton): Jive Samba TEN YEARS AFTER (Organ: Chick Churchill): Adventures Of A Young Organ ZOOT MONEY'S BIG ROLL BAND (Organ: Zoot Money): Zoot's Sermon ALAN PRICE SET (Organ: Alan Price): Critic's Choice FREE (Organ: Steve Miller/UK): Guy Stevens Blues SMALL FACES (Organ: Ian MacLagan): Grow Your Own MOTHERHOOD (Organ: James Jackson): Back In The Grass SPENCER DAVIS GROUP / Mk. Guest akanalog Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 james jackson must be jimmy jackson who has graced some of my favorite albums including embryo's "embryo's rache" and mal waldron's "the call" and embryo's "steig aus". i am interested in hearing more material he is on. i would also like to know his story. he seems to have left for germany pretty early on. what was he doing in america beforehand? who did he play with? connoisseur series500 Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I like a lot of the Legends of Acid Jazz series. These are Prestige two-fer reissues. I've got a bunch of them, but am still missing a few. Pretty good "soul-jazz." Quote
Ragu Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I found this at a used CD store, St. Louis Breakdown, The Best Of Oliver Sain and it turns out to be incredibly greasy. It comes from a Soul/Funk/R&B place more than jazz as a starting point. But as we all know, categories are meaningless. Oliver Sain, anybody know about this guy? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 My wife is upstairs (I'm in the basement) clunking away on the piano. It's payback for all that organ soul jazz I crank up at night... Quote
