Soul Stream Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 Great news. Just talked to the great Leon Spencer Jr. In about 3 months, he's flying to NYC to record a new CD for an unnamed (to me at least) jazz label based out of New York. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 I posted this on the CDBaby thread, but I thought I'd put it here as well. The samples on the CDBaby page of this CD are funktastic! _________________________________________________________________ I was just browsing CDBaby and came across this bad boy: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mbboq The first track is GREEEEAZY baby!! Might have to put this one in the basket! Check out the samples! I've never heard these cats before, but they are GROOVIN'! Quote
Sundog Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Listened to four tracks including the first . I like it, good stuff! A nice breezy if somewhat predictable version of "What's Going On" Quote
Sundog Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 Just heard this for the first time Friday night. As they say, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 I got the Mel Brown disc right before heading up north for my three day gig. It's a fun, funky set with some great playing all around. Them cats can play! Quote
Big Al Posted February 14, 2005 Author Report Posted February 14, 2005 How's this for a greeeazy review? These are both from someone calling himself "jazzman," reviewing The Sermon and House Party, respectively: This CD is from the same session that produced "House Party" and it is the first half of the best jazz ever recorded by Blue Note records. It is filthier than a flop house mattress and dirtier than a 50 cent whore. This is the best you will ever hear fron Tina Brooks, Lou Donaldson, and Jimmy Smith. This is incredible jazz. There is nothing out there better than this. 5 big Chalupas. Trust the Jazzman. This is so filthy, I found it in the gutter. This is simply the best jazz CD I have ever heard, and I am very picky. Lou Donaldson's playing on "Lover Man" is the best saxaphone ever recorded. 5 Chalupas. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 anyone pick up jimmy smith/joey d's new cd? i heard their version of "dot com blues" the cd has "back at the chicken shack", i'd really like to hear ss1 Quote

sidewinder Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 I can't recall seeing it on 'domestic' CD so Japan would be the only bet. I've a NY USA vinyl and can vouch that this one smokes ! Well worth tracking down. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 was the jimmy plays fats waller cd only a japanese import? i gotzz ta hear this cd ss1 I have it on a CD made in Canada. It's a nice, laid-back record. Jimmy plays some really sweet stuff. Quote

Soulstation1 Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 which one in the l.o.t.a.j. series is your fav? Quote
Ragu Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Unfortunately I found the Groove Holmes and Melvin Sparks L.O.T.A.J. CDs lacking, and I really enjoy them both as players elsewhere. I did, however, really get a kick out of both volumes of Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones from the series. Quote
Sundog Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 anyone like this cd? ss1 Own it, like it, and recommend it for those inclined towards groove music (whatever that is B-) ). I prefer Melvin's later work but this one is indeed infectious if lacking a bit in originality. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 which one in the l.o.t.a.j. series is your fav? Leon Spencer Jr. by a long shot. . But this series holds MANY treasures. Quote
