Sundog Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Doctor Lonnie Smith: Too Damn Hot! I'm sure this one didn't pass under the radar however I'm too lazy to go back through 20 pages of posts. Just picked this one up today. Peter Bernstein and Rodney Jones on the same album. Now that's what I call a front line of guitars! Fine strong grooves abound.... Quote

Soul Stream Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 "File under Raw Ass Funk, Heavy Gut Bucket Soul or Generally Having A Good Time" Check out THIS! Yeah, have you seen pictures of the band...they look like 14 year old kids from the suburbs...but damn are they funky! Quote
scottb Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I didn't see the pictures but did see that no one in band was old enough to buy cigarettes! Quote
Big Al Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 Damn, cuz they sound like a bunch of DIRTY old greeeazers!!! Speaking of old greeeazers, anyone ever pick up Jimmy Smith's SIX VIEWS OF THE BLUES? Now THAT is some baaaad greeeeaze!!! Cecil Payne's baritone is so down & dirty! Quote

Speaking of old greeeazers, anyone ever pick up Jimmy Smith's SIX VIEWS OF THE BLUES? Now THAT is some baaaad greeeeaze!!! Cecil Payne's baritone is so down & dirty! Yeah...I'll have to go back to that one. It's hard because there's just soooo much J. Smith, it's easy to skip over something as good as Six Views just because "The Sermon" or "Crazy Baby" is sitting right next to it! But Organ + Bari = Badass (just listen to Fred Jackson on Bari w/ Patton to prove it!). Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 I didn't see the pictures but did see that no one in band was old enough to buy cigarettes! Really? Well, how do you explain THIS smart-guy?!? Quote

scottb Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 That's probably why they knew they weren't old enough to BUY cigarettes. "Uh, Mr. Henry, could I bum another cigarette from you?" "You damn kids are smoking up all my cigarettes! These things ain't free you know. I gotta mind to tell your mama! Somebody better come up with some money. " Quote

Soul Stream Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 "Movin' On" with Jimmy and Grant is one of the best pairings in BN history imho. If you don't think so, listen to "Backtalk" on that LP....those guys trade choruses forever. Quote
Big Al Posted December 28, 2004 Author Report Posted December 28, 2004 Well, I’d like to think I’ve atoned for past greeeeaze-related sins of the past by finally getting my hands on Brother Jack’s Prestige Years compilation. DAMN, is this stuff hot!!! A couple ballads here & there, but mostly livin’ up to the titles of a few choice tracks: Tough Duff Screamin “Yeah Baby” with some Hot Barbecue while doin’ the Organ Grinder’s Swing! I feel ashamed that it took me this long to get it! Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 That's it. You're banned. Actually, maybe I should make my list of Top 10 Organ Records You Have To Own In Order To Post Here. Quote
scottb Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Thanks to Big Al for his unrelenting pimping of SIX VIEWS OF THE BLUES. I must've gotten this one with a bunch of other disc or just prior to an RVG release date because I had listened to it probably only 2-3 times. I broke it out yesterday to get Big Al off my back and enjoyed it much more than I remembered. Sometimes you're just not in the mood for the blues but yesterday I was feelin' it. Quote
