Besides that when I want chips, I want the real Flemish ones. :)

Flemish chips?......now that sounds like a whole different story....

We call 'm that here, and in Belgium too of course. Something like French Fries but than from the northern part of Belgium. Nothing like that at Mac.

Aren't chips a Belgian invention?

My memory of living/travelling in that area of Europe is chips with mayonnaise. Not something I could do.

What I do like is German chips with currywurst. Now that is the equal of English fish and chips.

I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Yes, they would add homemade mayonnaise. Much too fat for me. I'm really curious about the combination fish and chips so if I ever come to Britian I plan to check it out. What kind of fish do they use for that?

Cod or haddock in batter are the standard. Though there are many variations.

Beware of fish and chips in London (the tourist areas, anyway). Very careless. Once you get into the places where normal people live I suspect the quality improves.

Not quite true - 'The Laughing Halibut' (good enough for Jehova) serves fabulous F&C - in a side street off to the south of Victoria Street.

In South Wales, the locals all love 'Curry half and half', which is half a plate of curry half a plate of chips, mixed up in one of those polystyrene cartons. They even used to do it in the staff canteen where I worked - but mostly you get them from one of the seedy late night cafes in Caroline Street.

Oh, I'm sure there are some good ones around. But what I see along Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road does not look promising. Actually, the worst fish and chips I ever had (outside the place half a mile from me...I have to drive 2 miles for a good one here!) was in a large fish and chip restaurant on the corner of those two streets. Think it might have gone now as the whole area is under the wrecking ball as they rebuilt the underground station there.
