mjzee Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 My wife and I are both die-hard, long-time coffee drinkers. For years, we've used a Saeco coffeemaker that has a 10-cup thermal carafe. Sadly, the carafe has broken, and Saeco no longer makes coffee machines (apparently they're now owned by Philips and they only make espresso machines). We can't get a replacement carafe (we've tried), so we're now in the market for a new coffee maker. Our only real requirement, besides that it makes great coffee of course, is that it use a thermal carafe. I see that Cuisinart makes a 12-cup thermal (DTC-975BKN) that's received some nice reviews, so that's a maybe. Can anyone else recommend a coffee maker? Quote
GA Russell Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) mjzee, twenty years ago I lived in Atlanta. There was a coffee shop there owned and operated by John Martinez. For reasons that I never knew, Mr. Martinez was the subject of articles in both the New York Times and USA Today, blown up copies of which he had proudly on display. Mr. Martinez explained to me his view of how to make the proper cup of coffee. It was his opinion that any drip coffee maker would do. He said that you should first boil water in the microwave, and then pour the water into a thermos carafe. Then you make your coffee. By that time the water has heated the carafe, so you immediately pour our the water, and pour in the coffee. He said that the coffee will stay hot for a long time in the carafe, without cooking on a burner (which makes the coffee worse). http://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/07/garden/at-the-nation-s-table-213790.html?n=Top%2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fSubjects%2fT%2fTravel%20and%20Vacations http://www.martinezfinecoffees.com/company-information.html http://www.coffeereview.com/review.cfm?ID=1439 http://books.google.com/books?id=Da_d7SKHVGIC&pg=PA389&lpg=PA389&dq=John+Martinez+Atlanta+coffee&source=bl&ots=IQ3PtPGrqh&sig=MAi52AlkUHAxoT9Bv6vBQ5qrt7U&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zInNUumpO-7IsASo94DQDQ&ved=0CGAQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=John%20Martinez%20Atlanta%20coffee&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=qNLrJqgfg7wC&pg=PA252&lpg=PA252&dq=John+Martinez+Atlanta+coffee&source=bl&ots=nGRzzVtMTb&sig=Q7r_5HTq0hqa7M2KKAl6TpFdgRU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zInNUumpO-7IsASo94DQDQ&ved=0CGMQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=John%20Martinez%20Atlanta%20coffee&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=ZNfqOVf-LvMC&pg=PA100&lpg=PA100&dq=John+Martinez+Atlanta+coffee&source=bl&ots=gvRPXRAhKT&sig=HxzgnC5YKbuyfDrSH6X8Iuuqmd4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zInNUumpO-7IsASo94DQDQ&ved=0CGYQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=John%20Martinez%20Atlanta%20coffee&f=false Edited January 8, 2014 by GA Russell Quote
BeBop Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 I'd suggest "the young lady who works the morning shift at Ministerstwo Kawy, Warsaw", but that doesn't really answer the question. Quote
Jerry_L Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) I like the Melitta: http://www.amazon.com/Melitta-46894-Coffeemaker-Standard-Packaging/dp/B005L3NIRS/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1389212289&sr=8-14&keywords=coffee+maker It features the thermal carafe you desire, with no warming plate that cooks the coffee. Also does not drip as easily as most, unless you really over-tilt the pour. Edited January 8, 2014 by Jerry_L Quote
GA Russell Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 I should add that Mr. Martinez said that the problem with coffee makers which dispense the coffee into the thermos carafe is that the coffee then heats the carafe, instead of the carafe keeping the coffee hot. Quote
king ubu Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 I'd suggest "the young lady who works the morning shift at Ministerstwo Kawy, Warsaw", but that doesn't really answer the question. That's by far the best idea here (not that I knew that lady, but I'm sure she hands out coffee proper ... holy crap, 'merikins and their "coffee" ... microwave?!? gimme a break! ) Quote
Jerry_L Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) I should add that Mr. Martinez said that the problem with coffee makers which dispense the coffee into the thermos carafe is that the coffee then heats the carafe, instead of the carafe keeping the coffee hot. I got that from your first post, but I'm not likely to ever bother with any extra steps in the morning. I'd need to have a cup of coffee first. A compromise might be to rinse the thermal carafe with hot tap water first. Edited January 8, 2014 by Jerry_L Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 I'm in exactly the same position, with an older Bosch maker and no available replacement carafe. I'm going to follow the Consumer Reports suggestion and get a 40-buck Mr. Coffee, make the coffee and immediately pour it into a pre-heated thermal carafe. Think that'll work? Quote
sonnymax Posted January 8, 2014 Report Posted January 8, 2014 The trouble with many automatic drip coffee makers is that they do not heat the water sufficiently (195-205 degrees F) to brew a great cup of coffee. Before I began brewing with a French press exclusively, I had great success with the Capresso MT600. The current model appears to have everything you're looking for and more: (10-cup, 24-hour programmable timer, stainless steel-lined heating system, stainless steel carafe, permanent GoldTone filter, charcoal water filter, etc.). Check it out here. Quote

Scott Dolan Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Kuerig single cup. That's what we've rolled with for years. It's hard to beat. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Does Krups still make coffee makers? I've never drank a cup o joe in my life Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 Bought a 10-cup Krups about three weeks ago, on sale for about $40 (from about $75 IIRC). Looks good, relatively compact, does the job just fine. Quote
Jerry_L Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) If you are going to boil water separately and preheat your carafe, this is all you really need. RSVP 6066 Coffee Filter Cone No. 6 $10 online Edited January 9, 2014 by Jerry_L Quote
