mjzee Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 I didn't know he purchased Fantasy only in 1967. Who started the label? Quote
GA Russell Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 (edited) RIP. I'll look forward to seeing an obituary which focuses on his jazz business - maybe Marc Myers or Doug Ramsey. Edited January 4, 2014 by GA Russell Quote
JSngry Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 http://www2.concordmusicgroup.com/labels/label.php?Label_Name=fantasy (Est. 1949, includes Debut Records, Galaxy Records, and Kicking Mule Records) During the 1940s brothers Max and Sol Weiss operated a San Francisco plastic molding business that included a record pressing plant, one of whose early clients was pianist Dave Brubeck. Due to the local success of the Brubeck discs, the pressing plant metamorphosed into a label, which the Weisses named Fantasy after a science-fiction magazine. Besides such jazz musicians as Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Cal Tjader, and Vince Guaraldi, the company signed all manner of performers, including comedian Lenny Bruce. In 1968, a year after a group of investors headed by Fantasy sales manager Saul Zaentz purchased the company, Fantasy began hitting platinum many times over with the rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. paul secor Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 Jazz fans owe a debt of thanks to Saul Zaentz. He did much more than Norman Lear and Concord have done (and probably ever will do). Quote
medjuck Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 (edited) I met him once at a film event and thanked him for the OJC series. Glad I did. BTW I believe that he was married at one time to Charles Mingus's ex-wife Celia. According to Wikipedia that's how fantasy ended up with Debut records: Mingus gave it to them as a wedding present. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 RIP Saul Zaentz. I may complain (well, I do) about Prestige material - like the 7 Freddie McCoy LPs - that never did come out on CD, but a hell of a lot of music DID come out, which I'm sure never would have done under other ownership. And that's my life blood, not Blue Note. MG Quote
