Something to get me started up really easy this morning after a concert and party night that had finished sort of late:

- Al Haig "Today!" (Mint LP 711)

Or is it strictly as per midnight (when the previous evening actually had not yet ended before going to bed)?

In this case my very first spin of 2014 after returning home at 4 am would be

- Michael Hurtt & His Haunted Hearts "Come Back To Louisiana" (Allons AL-LP02)

They appeared at a rockabilly festival here on New Year's Eve and I liked their set so I bought their 2 LPs.

Gary Thomas - "Found on Sordid Streets" (Winter & Winter, 1997)

Because I may have the chance to hear Gary with Ralph Peterson here in DC in about 9 or 10 days.

Willie Humphrey in New Orleans (GHB). Two hours into the new year, I played this CD by a minor hero of mine, recorded April 18, 1988, when Willie was 87. I last saw him perform two months before he died at the age of 93. He still sounded great.

I like to spin records that have to do with the transition from old to new, changing time, and new possibilities, so my first spins were Jackie McLean: IT'S TIME!, NEW SOIL and NEW AND OLD GOSPEL.
