J.A.W. Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 (edited) Sony Korea released this massive 49CD box some time ago and it looks mighty tempting, but it costs an arm and a leg - and a few organs as well. Does anybody know if there are any plans to release it outside Korea - hopefully also in Europe - at a more moderate price? Szell is one of my favourite conductors. Edited December 31, 2013 by J.A.W. Stefan Wood Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 It was up on Amazon.com very recently -- now I see it is no longer in stock. Wait for the holidays to pass, and the stores should have it restocked. I thought I had seen it for $160. Quote

king ubu Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 Would this include concertos (i.e. all the Fleisher/Szell)? Or only orchestral/symphonic? Best current offer seems to be amazon.it (177 €): http://www.amazon.it/Edition-George-Szell/dp/B00BMKDQHQ/ Quote

king ubu Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 Thanks! That looks like a most helpful site! I guess I'm with Chuck though (but I assume he's got subsantially more Szell than I do). I see there was once an Original Jackets 10 CD box of Szell's Mozart ... now that would have possibly been of interest - but this big sucker would be too much for me, I'm quite sure, even at half the price it's going. In addition, there was an OJC of Beethoven. I have this, and it is nice. I pull it out from time to time. The symphonies and a few overtures have just been reissued in a very reasonable set: http://www.amazon.com/George-Szell-Conducts-Beethoven-Symphoni/dp/B00EC0VVRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388592309&sr=8-1&keywords=szell+beethoven And this cheapo Haydn set is still around: http://www.amazon.com/George-Szell-conducts-Haydn-Symphonies/dp/B003TUG3UO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388592907&sr=8-1&keywords=szell+haydn Also, there is a curiosity -- 5 CDs of his Decca and Philips recordings, primarily with European outfits: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009A41XS/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 While I might have been in the market for this back in the past, at this point I have quite a bit of Szell between various box sets and a few single CDs. I'm now wondering if there will be a massive Ormandy set on the way, which is something that I would at least consider. Quote

Still a lot of money, but I couldn't resist. Edited January 24, 2014 by J.A.W. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 25, 2014 Author Report Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) Just opened the Szell box and it looks very nice. It seems all recordings were remastered, using the DSD process. An 87-page CD-sized booklet with a discography in English and a text in both Korean and English is included. The 49 CDs are housed in rice paper sleeves in mini-LP jackets. Haven't listened to anything yet. Edited January 25, 2014 by J.A.W. Quote
Д.Д. Posted January 25, 2014 Report Posted January 25, 2014 I hope this will appear in a more affordable European incarnation at some point. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 25, 2014 Author Report Posted January 25, 2014 I paid about 2.80 euros per CD all-in, which is not that expensive. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 25, 2014 Report Posted January 25, 2014 Thanks for the import cd link Hans, for 135 US this is a great deal, and my Dad and I will enjoy going through the box set. Quote
