Stefan Wood Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 Discovered this bit of information from another forum, that J & R recently laid off their entire music staff and is no longer selling music in the store or online. Checked out their website, and this seems to be true. Has anyone been there in the past week to confirm? Quote
Tom 1960 Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I guess it must be the end of the world or pretty darn close to it. Quote
blind-blake Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 Once was face to face with Kareem Abdul jabbar perusing the stacks. Will miss the place Quote
7/4 Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 That's awful, but it was only a matter of time. It was the only place I could be 99% sure they'd have the latest ECM title, the only place for CDs in that corner of town. Quote
makpjazz57 Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I spent many of my paychecks (happily) there when I worked 1 block away for about 5 years. I remember Joe Horowitz as the main guy in the jazz section. Sorry to hear this sad news, but of course, not surprised. Quote
bertrand Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I was wondering what was up with their website. Damn, that really sucks. I loved going to that store Quote
BeBop Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I don't but much anymore, but back in the day, it was always good for a browse and ocassional purchase. Quote
ejp626 Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I surely bought some jazz there, but curiously I have much stronger memories of browsing the DVD store and picking up various items. Still, very sad tidings for those tied to brick and mortars. Quote
ElginThompson Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 J&R still sells music in store (pop and R&B), but jazz is dead. I was there on Thursday. Complete reorganization of the store. Signs were coming for years. It seemed like the jazz section shrunk weekly. Good, knowledgeable people worked the floor too. I hope they were reassigned elsewhere, but I doubt it. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 Only seeems like yesterday when they had 2 copies of the complete Jazz In Paris juddernaut behind the counter.. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 I mentioned this a few months back in another thread that J&R was down to only two rows of jazz. When I asked where the jazz music was, the worker said that's it. Quote
