Noj Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 I love his music. The song "Like It Is" is one of my favorites in any genre. Thank you Mr. Lateef. RIP Quote
kh1958 Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 A long time favorite, I wish I had gotten an opportunity to see him play live. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 i am absolutely stricken. without him jazz would be a COMPLETELY different entity. RIP Quote
CJ Shearn Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 I like his playing on "Grantstand". I really gotta explore more because he had that wonderful balance of being in and out. RIP....... a sad loss indeed. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 no jazz musican has done more to unite the music of this world Quote

Hank Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 So sad to hear this. I love his playing. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 (edited) Thanks Michael for linking. We have posted an updated version. A very difficult deadline as the news came very late and I didn't have much time for polishing. Edited December 24, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote
sidewinder Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 (edited) After the mother of all storms last night, some very sad news to start the day. I've always thought he was brilliant, from the time I bought that 'Morning' 2LP Savoy set. His music, although exotic, was always totally infused with the blues and played with great feeling. RIP - glad I got the chance to see him (NorthSea, with the Belmondos - even watching him pack his horns away was fascinating). 'Live At Peps' is one of the greatest live albums ever IMO. This year really is starting to feel like the end of an era Edited December 24, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
BillF Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 Never saw him play - by the time I saw the Adderleys Charles Lloyd had replaced him - but once saw him walking across Leicester Square with his saxophone case at a time when he was appearing at Ronnie's. Quote

Maybe en-route to Dobells? I've heard stories of him checking the LPs out there. Quote
mjazzg Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 A long career that brought great pleasure, thank you. Live a few years ago he was mesmerising and displayed the power of quietness. RIP Quote
ValerieB Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 RIP to a Master of everything he touched: horns, jazz fans, and students of music and the spirit. aside from his musical brilliance, I don't think anyone had a gentler nature or kinder more generous heart. Quote
Cyril Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 Love his flute playing so much....One of my favorite musicians. Rest in peace, Yusef Lateef. Quote
LWayne Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 RIP Yusef. Saw him play live in Atlanta with Adam Rudolph once. Memorable show. LWayne Quote
Joe Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 The original Bill Evans. I'll miss him. But I'm so glad he left such a huge and diverse discography behind. The Doctor is Always In. Quote
John L Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 He loved a long and productive life. We can only be grateful for all of the great music that he left us. RIP Quote
Clunky Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 Sad news but he was some age. The date with Grant Green on BN and Live at Peps CDs were my first exposure. I must confess to not having heard any of his post Atlantic output. The Golden Flute indeed. Quote
disaac Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 Loved the BN date with GG, Before Dawn and much of his output on the immortal YAL label including the wonderful Tenors series. You will be missed, brother. Quote
ornette Posted December 24, 2013 Report Posted December 24, 2013 Eastern Sounds was one of my first ways into jazz. Still play it with much pleasure. RIP. Quote
