I have never been to a pub where there weren't at least some obnoxious people doing some obnoxious thing at some point - at least not in a pub that was buzzing with life like this board is.

Did someone mention Johnny E?

;)

now, that was quite an obnoxious remark conn man!

I don't know if/why Mike has not posted here in a while, but I miss reading his posts as well. He was a valuable contributor here and before here, at Blue Note. I hope it was not Deep who drove him away.

I remember when Deep first came over here after being kicked out of AAJ, and he started off in somewhat typical fashion. He had multiple threads going - one in particular about some gay pride parade that was particularly offensive. I'd also seen him in action at JC and prior to that at JCS. The guy has a potential to be a boardwrecker. At about the same time you were able to confine hime to his padded room, I know I jumped to the conclusion that he 'd do the same here. After all, in his Wingy persona he did post in all forums albeit in a somewhat toned down fashion. That he has kept to his one thread to this point is somewhat of a miracle given his history. Having his drunken, raving mad, homophobic, racist, obscenity laden mental meanderings in one thread has worked to convince me to continue posting. I was used to ignoring Greg and politics on the BNBB and can do the same here with Deep.

But I can tell you that as far as Bev Stapleton is concerned, I don't think his departure is silly at all. We all bring different sensitivities and sensibilities to the table here. Some have been able to co-exist with Deep on the boards for a long time. Some, like me, find it convenient to ignore him so long as he his confined to his private little zoo. I know Bev posted over on JOL before it went down and Deep had his dog and pony show running there, so Bev had previous exposure to his persona. Kevin B, who is somewhat embattled here right now and in the midst of one of the biggest misunderstandings I've ever witnessed on a jazz board often expressed about politics on these boards that seeing how guys stand politically and sometimes religiously is more than he really wanted to know when it came to reason we are here - to discuss jazz. I know exactly what he means and I fully understand how seeing so many long standing posters provided a hero's welcome and give tacit approval to Deep's posts, posting style, and content by the way they engage him would upset Bev more than actually having him here.

Bev is a very thoughtful poster who added a lot of inciteful conversation to the board. I particularly enjoyed his posts on European jazz. Gave me lots of exposure to styles I enjoy and artists with whom I am unfamiliar.

I know Deep has a load of knowledge of jazz that most of us could only hope to have. I personally would not care less if he was uttering the secret of eternal life if he was spewing it out of his festering gob. (I know, eternal life is a bit of a stretch - I suppose I'd put on my hip boots and poncho <_< )

You had a decision to make and knew it had consequences. Losing some posters was one of them. You made the decision, you lost a(some) posters. Personally, I'd rather have one Bev Stapleton than 100 Deeps on my board, but it is not my board, nor my call. It would be nice if these things never had to occur. We go through life enjoying the good and dealing with the bad. But I guess you have to factor in that places like this are seen as oases for many - myself included. You know, a place to escape, talk about your favorite subject(s). The consequences of having a bigotted, loud mouthed, semi psychotic jackass excreting his waste in some corner of the board are unfortunate, disappointing and disheartening but, at least in my opinion, not something to be dismissed as silly

But then again, I love hockey in spite of the fights.

My advice - stand upwind.

My take on it, Ed is that you've got all types of people in life you may not happen to like. This is natural. If there happens to be a couple of posters who rub you the wrong way, then that shouldn't necessitate your departure from the board.

Now if the place is swarming with chimps, then that's a different story! :P

DEEP is confined to a thread; therefore, he is contained. GregM was basically confined to politics, but he really pissed a lot of people off. I've got a generally high tolerance level for people and it will take a lot more than those two guys to chase me out of here.

I always got along fine with Bev, but he is way too sensitive if he left on account of DEEP.

He must not get out much... <_<

I don't like hockey because of the fights...

on another thought, much of the content of the DEEP thread is WAY disturbing in a WAY disturbing way. If a newbie stomps into this place undaunted and starts at the top of the threads-list, that is going to be one hell of an experience and we will probably never see the poor person ever again.

Hey Couw-Boy, weren't you the one that plastered that picture of a woman's genitalia on a thread and called it "The Origin of Life" or somesuch nonsense? :P

That costed us a couple of newbies, I bet! :g

The point I'm trying to make is that I am in control of this ship and I fully intend to keep it from sinking due to some trouble-makers. I think so far I've done a good job and DEEP confining himself to that one thread is a good example.

Agreed :tup:tup

B3-er could pin some warning over that thread "not for newbies" or "only for the initieated" or could ask for a special password ...

... and BTW, now where was that "origin" picture? I know the painting - okay I knew you wouldn't believe me - but missed the whole ballyhoo about the post.

Couw's got it on his bedroom wall. My book on Courbet discreetly states that it is "from a private collection."

Yeah, it's art to Couw alright... B)

Hey, you can call me a chump, let Deep post here (as long as I don't have to read it), AND not notice if I don't post for a week, but don't start knocking hockey, eh?

Aw shucks, nothing wrong with hockey. Not as exciting as the NFL, but it sure beats baseball! :P (Save it, Ghost and Johnny!)

The NFL?? You mean that "sport" that consists largely of overweight men standing around catching their breath for 45 seconds after actually having to play for 5 seconds? Hah! :P

I'll have you know Moose that Defensive Tackle, "Big" Ted Washington (6'-4", 375lbs) can move well enough to pass coach Bill Belichick's rigorous fitness tests.

Well, maybe it will also give us a couple of newbies in a few months :P

it was in a thread about Stonehenge actually depincting the origin of the world according to Courbet. There was no ballyhoo, b3er simply yanked the pic. Understandable as some are posting from work and may have had a lot to explain to the boss. We replaced the pic with a link and warning. ^_^

In a country where prominent tits can dominate the the news in times of war... <_<;)

Thank you for you kind words, Ed.

Just to clarify, I’ve not left this board in a huff! Been reading it daily and continue to enjoy and learn from it.

I’ve not posted here for a few weeks largely to avoid giving D’Imperio another opportunity to go off on one.

I’m not remotely sensitive with regard to the man – it’s just that I deal with 14 year old versions on a daily work basis (D’Imperio’s a real pansy compared with a few that I teach!). So I prefer to relax in a different atmosphere. I don’t care for gutter talk but am more than capable of ignoring it. I continue to believe vicious personal, racial and homophobic abuse needs to be challenged. If that makes me a puritan, well I’ll happily live with the label (a bit weird giving my Catholic upbringing!).

Ed is right – I was disappointed by a few members here who chose to treat him like a hero. It’s been amusing to watch some of their desperate attempts to ingratiate themselves with him (‘Tell us your stories’; ‘I’ve bought all your CDs’; ‘Look, I tried to get thrown off another board just to be like you’). The following painting comes to mind:

Incidentally, at no point have I asked for D'Imperio to be banned.

For the bulk of the membership here I retain the utmost respect and will continue to read your posts with enthusiasm.

Above all I feel Jim has done an excellent job in dealing with a very awkward situation.

I wish Jim and the Organissimo board every success in the future…and look forward to the band’s next album.
