GA Russell Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 Here is a Coltrane CD called Traneing In which was released the last week of October. Does anyone know anything about it? Live recordings? http://www.oldies.com/product-view/58139O.html http://www.amazon.com/Traneing-John-Coltrane/dp/B0006Z2GCE/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1386466073&sr=1-4&keywords=john+coltrane+traneing+in Quote
J.A.W. Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) It's been released by a European public-domain label. It looks like a bootleg; discussion on the Hoffman board: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/john-coltrane-traneing-in-boxed-set-december-2013.336329/ Edited December 8, 2013 by J.A.W. Quote
marcello Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) I have some of those performances on LP "Coltraneology Vol. 2" on BYG (Japan) Stockholm Konserthuset 10/22/63 It's the "Classic Quartet" not w/ Red Garland Trio Edited December 8, 2013 by marcello Quote
John L Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 It would appear that there is nothing new here in the sense that it has all been bootlegged before. But it might be a nice supplement for somebody who only has the official recordings. Quote
David Ayers Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 I couldn't really understand from this discussion what we are talking about - GA's link is to a 2004 release, not a recent one. In any case, the tracks of Coltranology Vol 2 are as follows 1. Mr P.C. 2. Traneing In 3. Spiritual 4. I Want To Talk About You Just not sure how we established that 'this' CD (whatever CD we are in fact talking about) contains these tracks. Feeling a bit slow this morning. Quote
John L Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 Sorry. I only looked at the link in the second post. The single disc looks like a compilation of tracks from various Europe tours in 61, 62, and 63. As far as I can recall, Coltrane only played Blue Train in Europe in 61, Traneing In in 62, and Spiritual in 63. Of course, it also could be something else, but I very much doubt that it is from the same concert. Quote
marcello Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 Looking further it seems that "Blue Train was played ( w/ Dolphy & Reggie Workman) in 1961. "Spiritual" in on 10/25/63. "Traneing In" could be 11/17 62, 11/19/62 (there were two concerts on that day), 11/22/63 and10/25/62. So, really no help from me! Quote
jazzbo Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) I thought we were perhaps talking about this 7 cd box set on the horizon, bootleg, available from amzon.fr: Lavish deluxe collection of stunning performances restored & re mastered. Contains unreleased material. Superb performances by the 'Classic Quartet' - McCoy Tyner Piano , Elvin Jones Drums & Jimmy Garrison on Bass. Guest appearances also by Stan Getz & Oscar Peterson. Includes the first ever recordings of the collaboration between Coltrane & McCoy Tyner. Also we hear the first performance of Coltrane on soprano Saxophone. Includes rare 30 minute version of 'Liberia' compared to the 7 minute LP version and another rarity .The Night has a thousand eyes'. The song 'Delilah' by Victor Young performed at Copenhagen 1961 would never be recorded again so its inclusion in this set makes it also a rare jewel. Also includes poster and 2 Postcards. Disc: 1 1. On Green Dolphin Street 2. Walkin' 3. The Theme 4. Yesterdays / Autumn Leaves/ What's New/ Moonlight in Vermont Medley 5. Rifftide Disc: 2 1. Liberia 2. Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye 3. erwbol Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 How does this 7 CD box set compare in sound quality to the Pablo Live Trane European Tours? Any tape speed/pitch issues? Most of this material probably already resides neglected on my external harddrive. Quote
king ubu Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 How would it differ much? They'll be using the same sources that we use to fill up our external harddisks ... also whom did they steal the photographs from? I'm sure those aren't PD yet ... Quote
John L Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 How does this 7 CD box set compare in sound quality to the Pablo Live Trane European Tours? Any tape speed/pitch issues? Most of this material probably already resides neglected on my external harddrive. I think that it is a safe bet that no new tapes were found, in which case the average sound quality of this material is significantly worse than the Pablo Live box. The latter consists of mostly, if not all, professionally made recordings. But the sound quality is still quite acceptable to non-audiophiles like me. Quote
king ubu Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 Well, I assume if there were new tapes, they'd have come to the bootleggers via dime, so we'd have them, too ... there are many more radio material from the European tours that weren't in the Pablo, which could need a fixed update anyway (correcting all the freaked up info). Quote
erwbol Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 (edited) Frankly, I've given up on trying to bring order to the Trane bootlegs I got from Dime. Edited December 26, 2013 by erwbol Quote
jazzbo Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 (edited) My copies of these are earlier bootleg cds or tapes of tapes burned to cdr from collectors. No directly downloaded versions here. It's hard to say where these labels obtain source material definitively. Anyway, too bad we don't have sanctioned releases like these. David Ayers Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Agreed on quality, and most of this if not all seems to be around so I don't know what is new. Don't know if you browsed this guy's website but it is a weird set -up. His stuff is on Spotify, though not this one yet, so it is easy to check it out. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Don't do Spotify myself, but yeah, that makes it sort of easy. Quote
