Joe Posted December 7, 2013 Report Posted December 7, 2013 Wonderful player and composer. He owed a lot to Monk, but, like Mal Waldron and Andrew Hill, he took that influence to new places. Of his later recordings, I find the duets with Evan Parker most rewarding... http://www.onefinalnote.com/reviews/t/tracey-stan/suspensions-and.asp Quote
Head Man Posted December 7, 2013 Report Posted December 7, 2013 What sad news - I've been listening to and watching Stan play for the last 45 years. I know he's not been in the best of health recently (several postponed concerts) but this news has upset me more than I expected. Quote
John Litweiler Posted December 7, 2013 Report Posted December 7, 2013 Some years ago he played for us at the Chicago Jazz Festival. Art Themen was his tenor player that day - very good. Quote

Jazzjet Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 Wasn't that BBC documentary done for 'Omnibus' and repeated by BBC4 not too long ago? I have it on DVD somewhere - will have to search it out. Hopefully the Beeb will repeat it at some time. What struck me about that programme (also mentioned in Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' book) was that he nearly packed in jazz in the early 1970s to be a postman, due to lack of work. It's good that in the latter years this changed for the better. That is an excellent documentary, well worth repeating. Stan tells the story of writing most of 'Under Milk Wood' on the night bus after ong sessions at Ronnie's. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 What a drag - wonderful player. May he rest in peace. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted December 8, 2013 Report Posted December 8, 2013 One of the masters. So much wonderful music...for anyone who has never heard it, please listen to Starless and Bible Black...those who already have will be listening again in any case... Quote
