David Ayers Posted December 3, 2013 Report Posted December 3, 2013 I'll add that on Beethoven's symphonies I'm a bit of a Bev - the performances really are just someone having a go. The sense of these works is in the mind. Even on Kleiber, while I recommend it, I'd never actually dig it out and play it. Oops - the Klemperer 7 is stereo, the 5 on the same disc is mono. My bad. J.A.W. Posted December 3, 2013 Report Posted December 3, 2013 Well, as I explained before, the Carlos Kleiber is a "reference" recording for me, and I really don't care what others think of my using this description. Sheesh, the things people can get worked up about in this place... Quote
J.A.W. Posted December 3, 2013 Report Posted December 3, 2013 Oops - the Klemperer 7 is stereo, the 5 on the same disc is mono. My bad.Klemperer recorded the 7th twice with the Philharmonia Orchestra, in 1955 and 1960 (both stereo), and once with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, in 1968. The 1955 performance is a favourite of mine. Quote
David Ayers Posted December 3, 2013 Report Posted December 3, 2013 Noooooooooo - I'm not critcising your use of the phrase, it is perfectly comprehensible and a matter of fact AFAIAC. I do dislike the conservative tug the idea exerts in Gramophone. That's a different matter. Yes the Klemperer I refer to is the early one on the EMI GROC CD. Quote

Stefan Wood Posted December 3, 2013 Report Posted December 3, 2013 I prefer the Carlos Kleiber disc as well. Quote

RiRiIII Posted December 4, 2013 Report Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) You will enjoy Carlos Kleiber's Beethoven 7th a lot. Actually he conducted this work more than any other, along with the 4th. Edited December 4, 2013 by Alexandros Quote
