Д.Д. Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 I was listening to the excellent Jerry Hahn's CD (imaginatively titled "Hahn Solo") on Migration, and realized how few solo guitar CDs I have. Some Derek Bailey... some (overdubbed) Sonny Sharrock... that might be about it. I have more solo drums CDs! So, any recommendations? Quote
king ubu Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Ralph Towner or Bill Connors on ECM ... Joe Pass ... those all might not be to everybody's liking. One that I enjoyed a lot (got it last year, a few months before his premature death): Quote
kh1958 Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Joe Diorio, Solo Guitar. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FMH8GW/ref=dm_ws_ps_cdp?ie=UTF8&qid=1385473003&s=music&sr=1-2 Quote
paul secor Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 I assume that you want to limit this thread to jazz/jazz related solo guitar recordings. There are a lot of non-jazz solo recordings out there. Quote

7/4 Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 I've never seen that Bern Nix album! Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 That Duck Baker disc is really something. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Joe Pass,of course .... Steve Khan did a nice solo disc for RCA Novus, one side is a long Monk medley. Will have to dig it out. Derek Bailey, and other free form players over here that followed him, Hans Reichel, Joe Sachse. There's half an LP by John McLaughlin from his pre-Mahavishnu days, too. Quote
jazztrain Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 I've always liked this one. I remember seeing him live (solo) shortly after it was released: Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Jimmy Ponder - Alone - HighNote MG Quote
B. Clugston Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Dennis Budimir's Alone Together on Revelation is a nice one—though he is actually duetting with himself (overdubbed) on most of the tracks. (Gary Foster also shows up for two songs.) Quote
xybert Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Not a traditional solo record but i've always been partial to Bill Frisell's Ghost Town. Quote
sonnymax Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 :tup for Joe Diorio and Joe Pass. Some other suggestions: Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Masayuki Takayanagi has a few nice solo discs...there's also a very interesting Raymond Boni solo lp on the French Palm label Quote
colinmce Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Al Viola - Solo Guitar (Mode, 1957) is quite nice. Quote
Jim R Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 The Raney album is nice, but he overdubbed solos over his own rhythm tracks, as I recall. Quote
sgcim Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 Johnny Smith's "Man With The Blue Guitar" is a prerequisite for solo guitar playing. Harry Leahey recorded one that I've never heard, but I'm sure it was as great as his teacher's, mentioned above. George Van Eps did a few, "My Guitar", "Solo Guitar Recordings" (which featured Smith on the other CD playing Spanish Classical guitar recordings with a pick! ) Kenny Burrell recorded one that I'm picking up this weekend. The Lenny Breau ones mentioned above are also great works of art. I'm pretty sure Cal Collins did one on Concord, but someone I'd need to verify that...I saw him play solo guitar live at Bechet's in NYC back in the 80s and dug it. There's a recent one by a younger player that is incredible, but I can't remember his name. I'll add it later when I remember. Quote
Jim R Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 In addition to Breau, Sharrock and Leitch, some other fantastic players from Canada who are great solo players (not sure what they've recorded in that setting): Ed Bickert Reg Schwager Lorne Lofsky Quote
mjzee Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 Martin Taylor is an excellent guitarist, almost like Art Tatum on guitar. Try this one, which is even more impressive because it's live: Ralph Towner, of course. One of the most distinctive voices of the last half century. This one is also live: Ron Affif? Very excellent, underrated guitarist. For his solo work, listen to: Jim Hall has never played a bad note. I don't know that he's ever done a solo album. How about his duets with Pat Metheny: Jimmy Bruno? Yes. Finally, if you'll expand your definition of jazz a little, seriously consider Leo Kottke and John Fahey. I've had many satisfying hours of listening to them. Quote
sgcim Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 In addition to Breau, Sharrock and Leitch, some other fantastic players from Canada who are great solo players (not sure what they've recorded in that setting): Ed Bickert Reg Schwager Lorne Lofsky Unfortunately, Ed Bickert has never done a solo LP. The guy I was trying to remember before was Jonathan Kreisberg. His recent solo CD is unbelievable. Not possible to surpass that shit... Quote
