Mark Stryker Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 (edited) Anyone have a discography, recording or reference that gives the specific date in 1945 that Gerald Wilson recorded his arrangement of "Groovin' High"? (First big band chart on the tune, recorded not that long after Dizzy's first small group recording...) It would be helpful to know who the trumpet and tenor soloists are, though I think the trumpeter is Hobart Dotson. Edited November 10, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote

romualdo Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 was released on Excelsior 78 159 & has been reissued on Rhino CD 75872 (Central Ave Sounds) no specific date in Lord discog - only 1945 There's also an AFRS Jubilee version from Jan 46 (same lineup as above) - it's on the Hep CD "Groovin High In LA 1946" Quote
Mark Stryker Posted November 11, 2013 Author Report Posted November 11, 2013 Thanks. So, no day/month listing in Lord. Damn. With I knew more to help construct a time line ... Quote
mikeweil Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 It's also on the first Chronological Classics CDs of Wilson's band. 1945, that's all we know ... The master number was OR-159-A3 - the two tracks recorded May 21, 1945 had OR-126 and OR-128 - so It should have been recorded no sooner than July 1945. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted November 13, 2013 Author Report Posted November 13, 2013 Excellent deduction, Mr. Holmes (Mike) Thanks Quote
