connoisseur series500 Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 I don't mind the soprano sax at all. Don't you like Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," Moose? You really know how to hit below the belt, don't you? That's only the album that hooked me on jazz to begin with. What can I say? And yet even with Coltrane, I can only take so much soprano. With Shorter (who's tone sounds somewhat nasal to me already) I can handle far less before giving up. Figures Moose. You and I have similar music tastes, so I'm not surprised you dig that tune. That was one of the first tunes which attracted me to jazz as well. And McCoy Tyner... Quote
couw Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 And I didn't mean to criticize you personally, Conn. You just brought up something (with innocent intentions I'm sure) that I feel particularly passionate about. Absolutely no offense taken, FOF. When you post as much as I do then you're bound to post a lot of trash. B) I started this thread late last night when I had better things to do. I've got Jazzbo on my postcount tail and he hammers out 40 girlie pics a day when he's hot. That's pressure man! I knew it was all about post count! and conn man, be carefull with those DEEP might find out ... Quote

king ubu Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 The Dawn catalogue has several nice things, among them two CDs by the Jazz Modes (for French horn freaks ) The Watkins albums have wordless vocals on some tracks by a rather operatic sounding singer - he wanted a different color, using the voice like an instrument. I love them, though, and I would advice anybody with only a trace of interest in Watkins to get the two Atlantic LPs which are available on two Koch CDs, as long as they are around, they swing harder than the Dawn sessions, one has an extended group with Sahib Shihab that will appeal the most to the board members here. Atlantic: Dawn: Mike, thanks for posting the covers, I was too lazy... I don't have the Atlantic/Koch discs - do they have a website (Koch, I mean)? And do you know a good place where to get them cheap? Add the Blue Note 10" Conn! There's the most hunting french horn I ever heard! ubu Quote
king ubu Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 And how about yodelling? There's a swiss trumpet player, Hans Kennel, who is supposed to do pretty interesting things on alphorn. And the group "Pago Libre" with John Wolf Brennan also used it to good results. While I'm not at all a fan of swiss folklore, I think in the right hands the alphorn can be pretty cool! ubu Quote
BeBop Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 And how about yodelling? ubu What, you never seen James Moody in concert? Great stuff. Quote

And do you know a good place where to get them cheap? Add the Blue Note 10" Conn! There's the most hunting french horn I ever heard! I got the two Koch reissues from amazon.de - I'm afraid you won't get them cheaper. Since Koch was bought by some major, they have been deleting a lot of stuff - e.g. many excellent classical recordings from the German Koch label. It is horrible. No idea if they are still available. You can check the US Koch site. I didn't post the cover of the first Julius Watkins Blue Note session as I assumed everybody here has that one - some of the most beautiful french horn ever recorded, the range of his sounds on the horn is amazing, the tone is gorgeous.
