The best Special Edition album, IMO.......... although "Tin Can Alley" has nice material. Quote

flat5 Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) "I heard a really great modern classical bass clarinetist a good 10+ years ago who replicated Dolphy's sound amazingly, though I think he played through-composed solos (and what I heard was his tribute to Dolphy, on solo bass clarinet). Dutch, iirc, and his name was Harry Sparnaay. Really fantastic, for what it was -- though it certainly wasn't anything beyond what is was -- i.e. "jazz" it was not." I had hoped someone would mention Harry in this silly (IMO) thread. Harry is a great artist on the bass clarinet. Nobody will play the bass clarinet "like" Eric Dolphy. or flute or alto saxophone. How will we define 'like' anyway? I had hoped someone would mention Harry in this silly (IMO) thread. Harry is a great artist on the bass clarinet. clifford_thornton Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Dolphy is Dolphy, but this is definitely worth checking out: Yep. The opening cut has a "rough & ready" sound that's not unlike Far Cry or At The Five Spot. That is a DAMN fine album. Really enjoyed seeing the mention of Harry Sparnaay upthread; I know his work mostly from appearances with the Theo Loevendie Consort et al. Fine player. Not exactly Dolphy-esque, though ED was certainly an influence: Michel Portal. Quote

Any one in particular? I was listening to 'Hera' on Multikulti when I posted. More recent 'Stone Fog' is good too, slightly more restrained Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Michael Moore (Amsterdam, NL) plays VERY good bass clarinet & regular clarinet. His playing on all his horns (clarinets and alto sax) is even better than very good in my listening experience. At his best as he is on Hemingway's The Marmalade King he transcends what those instruments seemingly are capable of. When I've seen him live he sometimes blends into the music and sometimes he astounds as he did the last time with ICP and with his Americanized Available Jelly band. Quote
flat5 Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 Yes, Steve, I agree. I've known MM since 1973 and used to play with and listen to him enough to have heard him in many situations. He is an exceptional musician, person, and a good composer/arranger. I actually play on the first Available Jelly album :-) Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 And now about 30 minutes from Marty Ehrlich's band. Can hear them warming up from East 2nd st and Avenue C Getting a bit excited to hear the band Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 No bass clarinet which is expected as he doesn't often play it Ehrlich has his alto, soprano and what must be a b-flat clarinet Front row right in front of the two great horn dudes Later I'll move my comments to the live reviews if I'm inspired Yes, Steve, I agree. Blue Train Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) While finding an example of a Blindfold Test for page in Post a Pic thread....I came across this Miles Davis quote about Dolphy. "That's got to be Eric Dolphy - nobody else could sound that bad! The next time I see him I'm going to step on his foot. You print that. I think he's ridiculous. He's a sad motherfucker." http://www.forghieri.net/jazz/blind/Davis_3.html Edited November 17, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
l p Posted November 17, 2013 Author Report Posted November 17, 2013 as some have pointed out, i'm sorry to have started this thread. it's just naming anyone who has played the bass clarinet. i guess i'm interested in the *type of music* being played by a group with a bass clarinet as one of the soloists on all versions of spiritual and less so on india from coltrane's 1961 village vanguard box. and also on 'springtime' from dolphy's 6/11/64 paris show. i'm sure that everyone has the coltrane box, and here is 'springtime' from dolphy's 6/11/64 paris show. his solo starts at about 10min into the tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjgSHCGBh2o thanks Quote
