this is from 2010, but timely.

"Also, when I played with Joe Henderson...apparently, I was getting in the way with my comping, so Joe clued me in, saying "It would be great if you comped for ME the way you comp for YOURSELF." So that was a bit of a clue. So now when I teach pianists how to comp for themselves, I say," Don't play your left hand and right hand at the same time! Just play in the holes!" And when you comp for yourself, which is kind of the joke of what happened with Joe Henderson, is that you know what you are going to play...I said to Joe, "Yeah, I KNOW what my right hand is going to play!" It began the process of me listening better. "

interesing clip; Potter is a bit of a bore, but Kevin can play; somewhere I have some things we did together in a studio, maybe late 1980s, not sure; back then he had more of a Tristano-line thing going. It is interesting that he has lost a bit of his old intensity. Sometimes "maturity" is a mixed blessing.

maturity as a mixed blessing--------last night, the hays trio performed 2 sets at smalls for a very sparse gathering. the second gorgeous gorgeous quiet set, some with the bassist at the french horn, would have been more appropriate for a funeral, and brought only meager applause. it was so soft you could have heard the house cat padding around.

i adored the sets and tried to listen to a replay today, but they were playing something else.
