romualdo Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 RIP Frank perchance, yesterday I received the Basie live Roulette set - lots of listening & here's to you Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Wow. Sad news, but he led a long and distinguished life. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Remarkable man & musician. True master of craft, art & life. Cats like Frank, whew, these men are heroes. Special condolences to board member Michael Weiss who worked with Frank a lot (and with whom I last saw Frank play a few years ago.) Quote
GA Russell Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 RIP. I think his self-titled The Frank Wess Quartet was one of the last OJCs issued. http://www2.concordmusicgroup.com/albums/The-Frank-Wess-Quartet/ Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Terrible news. A truly fine jazz musician. The IPO label just recently released a lovely quartet CD by Frank Wess with Kenny Barron on piano. R.I.P Quote
thirdtry Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 The IPO recording 'Magic 101' was his latest release: http://www.allegro-music.com/online_catalog.asp?sku_tag=IPO31023 And in the description it lists this disc as "the first in a series of three CDs" so I think there will be some new Frank Wess in the future. Also, George H. Buck's Progressive Records just released a 1981 session of Frank exclusively playing flute a few days ago: http://www.jazzology.com/item_detail.php?id=PCD-7057 Quote
Milestones Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I was recently listening to After Hours, a late 50's jam technically led by Thad Jones. But Frank should be considered co-leader. He usually soloed on both flute and tenor. Good stuff! Quote
jlhoots Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 That IPO CD mentioned (twice) above is very nice.R.I.P. Quote

Mark Stryker Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 (edited) One way to think about the sweep of Frank Wess' life in music is to consider the big bands that he worked with: Billy Eckstine in the '40s, Count Basie in the '50s/60s; Jazz Composer's Orchesra in '68; Clark Terry in the '60s/70s, Jaco Pastrorius' Word of Mouth in the early '80s, Toshiko Akiyoshi in the mid '80s/early 90s. Wow. Edited October 31, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 i like how he also made a lot of records with people from pre-bop jazz, like those swingville releases, etc. he was the real deal. RIP Quote
