Artists that many are into, but you just don't get. A confessional

I have a few that I just can't seem to get into but so many others, including many here really enjoy.

1. Wayne Shorter. He is a find musician, but I don't really dig his music. I tried. I even caught his 80th birthday show at Lincoln Center, but I left wanted more.

2. Oscar Peterson. He plays too many notes for my ears. I know he's played with just about every legendary jazz musician, but I don't care for his style.

Anyone else have any musicians that are highly esteemed in the eyes on many but you don't understand why?

I try not to go down that road anymore. You could hate everything you've heard a guy play, and then someone pulls out a record where the guy sounds fine.

That happenned twice with Ornette this week.

Instead of the free stuff he usually plays, they played stuff from his "free funk' period, and he was playing some nice things in the groove, with a tonal center that he was clearly creating out of.

Then they played the thing he did in 59 with Shelly Manne, Percy Heath and Red Mitchell, and OC sounded like Eric Dolphy!

Even Don Cherry sounded good!

What is this world coming to?

But not 'getting' someone or a style of music does not necessarily mean hatred. Just an inability (so far) to connect.

I 'didn't get' Bitches Brew for nearly 20 years - then it clicked and it's now a favourite. So I'm open to Verdi suddenly clicking.

I don't like Brubeck's piano, particularly on the Oberlin album, which I think is a defensible position. Less defensible, according to received opinion, is the fact that there are no Tatum albums in my collection.

That's one that I got immediately when I put 'Pharoah's Dance' on the platter. 'On The Corner' took over 15 years though and when it did happen it was like a huge insight.

I couldn't get past the lack of harmonic variety - I think my brain is particularly wired for rich harmony.

I don't think I heard 'On the Corner' until the late 90s and was underwhelmed. But I did like some of the music from those sessions that turned up on those composite double albums. So I took a chance with a cheap download of the Complete OTC sessions and all was revealed!
