sidewinder Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) Sorry to hear of the recent passing of the fine Scottish tenor player Tommy Whittle. A real stalwart of the scene over here for many decades. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/23/tommy-whittle Heard to great advantage on the Tubby Hayes 'Live at the Hopbine' CD (Whittle organised the jazz performances at this Wembley venue). Big Beat Steve Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 Sorry to hear that. RIP I always enjoyed his "Waxing with Whittle" LPs on Esquire that gathered a lot of his early 50s recordings - fine, concise, intense examples of how modern jazz was received and molded here in Europe. Quote

Yes, he was strongly featured on Esquire. Captured on this reissue - must get hold of a copy. Strange that they didn't include any of the tracks on the 'Bebop In Britain' 4CD set. JohnS Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 Sorry to hear this. Sadly I have no recollection of hearing him live. Quote
Head Man Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) Very sad news. This is a nice set from Acrobat if you want to hear how good he was: Plus a self-produced album from 1959, also available from Acrobat. Edited October 25, 2013 by Head Man Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Sad news. Tommy Whittle was a nice tenor player in the style of Lester Young and the Brothers. R.I.P. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I first encountered Whittle on this Johnny Keating album, way back when: http://www.discogs.com/Johnny-Keating-And-His-All-Stars-Swinging-Scots/release/3352141 Just listened to samples from his Warm Glow and Blues in the Dark on Amazon. Very nice; he had his own thing. Also, now that I think of it, I have a very good Whittle quartet album from 2003, "Grace Notes" (Spotlite). Mostly standards, plus two tasty originals from the '50s, Lucky Thompson's "Tom-Kattin'" and Hank Mobley's "Funk in the Deep Freeze." Quote
